M.F.A. Photography    Arizona State University

Alex Emmons grew up in rural upstate New York. Since leaving this first home, she has moved, traveled and lived abroad extensively informing her investigation of the intersection of domestic space and the agencies of displacement. In the studio, she is primarily interested in digital media and how to incorporate the various output options towards projects addressing personal narratives as an impetus for creative production. Alex is represented by Alan Klotz Gallery in New York City and is exhibited nationally and internationally.

Alex received her Bachelor of Arts at Denison University majoring in Studio Art, with a focus in photography and sculpture and a minor in Sociology/Anthropology. Later, Alex earned her Master of Fine Arts in Photography at Arizona State University where she studied with Betsy Fahlman, Bill Jenkins, Mark Klett among others. After graduation, Alex taught all levels of photography at New Mexico State as a sabbatical replacement. The following year she taught at Boise State University as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the photography program there, where Alex served on the graduate faculty committee, a graduate thesis committee as well as many senior student committees.

Alex’s teaching practice spans beginning photography, digital imaging, alternative processes, color photography, large format, and studio lighting. In the classroom, she brings practical hands-on approach to both conceptual and technical project as well as service-oriented methods. Whether art career seeking students or photography enthusiasts, Alex teaches them to become creative problem solvers no matter their career goals. At Central, Alex is involved with student organizations as well as Full Frame. Alex coordinated the CWU 2008 Performing & Fine Arts Career Day as well as other student exhibitions and installation opportunities to provide experience through learning. Please feel free to contact her with any questions regarding Photography in the Department of Art.
