Washington State Archives - Central Regional Branch
Main Page | Guides to Records | Research Requests
The following guide consists of entries which describe all the records held at the Central Regional Branch. This Branch collects records primarily from local government entities throughout nine counties in central Washington: Benton, Chelan, Douglas, Franklin, Grant, Kittitas, Klickitat, Okanogan, and Yakima counties.
The majority of the records originate with county governments, municipal governments, school districts, and other special districts. However, multiple other sources also contribute to the Branch's holdings. These other sources include regional branches of state government agencies, other public entities such as Central Washington University, public and private individuals, and other non-public sources.
Accordingly, the records are arranged and described in this guide generally with respect to their places of origin. A listing of these record groups (below) provides links to each section of the guide. Sections covering Genealogical Records, Central Washington University, Yakima Valley Community College, County and Municipal Governments, and School Records, exist in separate guides, with links provided in the list below.
Preceding every entry is an alphanumeric code unique to each record. Should a researcher request a particular record, the addition of this code will help Archives staff members locate more easily the precise record.

Researchers should note: Date spans represent the first and last dates in a series but do not always denote a continuous chronology. Record series often contain gaps in chronology. When possible, these gaps are noted in the description, but to locate a record for a particular date, researchers should either view the records in person or consult with Archives staff.

| Record Group: | Secretary of State and Territory | ||
| The office of Secretary of State is a constitutionally elected position and is successor to the office of Secretary of the Territory, 1854-1889. The Secretary of State is the official recorder for the state and custodian of the acts of the Legislature, and other official actions. There are now three main divisions of the office: Elections, Archives, and Corporations and Trademarks, and several minor divisions, including the Productivity Board, the Oral History Program, Charitable Organizations, and others. The Elections Division files and certifies nominations for all elected positions, issues notices of elections, tabulates election data received from county auditors, and certifies election results via the State Canvassing Board. The Division of Archives and Records Management provides records management services to all state and local government agencies, preserves the archival records from all levels of government in Washington, and operates the State Microfilm Bureau. The Corporations and Trademarks Division records articles of incorporation, licenses both domestic and foreign corporations, records trademarks and deeds to state property, and issues municipal corporation charters. The Secretary is also a member of numerous boards and committees of state government. Some functions of the Secretary of State's office have been discontinued or transferred to other agencies. The Secretary of State was State Sealer of Weights and Measurers until that function was transferred to the Department of Agriculture, in 1921. The office also licensed automobiles until 1921, whereupon that activity was transferred to the Department of Licenses. Both of these transfers were as a result of the re-organization of state government effected by the Administrative Code. The Blue Sky Law of 1923 placed the regulation of securities sales under the Secretary of State. This function was transferred to the Department of Licenses in 1926. The Secretary of State was also ex-officio State Insurance Commissioner prior to 1907, and custodian of the state capitol and grounds during the early years of Statehood. | |||
