Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies

Welcome to my web page! I have a passion for philosophy, and I try to instill that same passion in my students. My teaching and research are primarily in applied ethics, Kant and nineteenth-century philosophy, and normative ethics, but I also work in social & political philosophy, the philosophy of law, and the philosophy of art.

I earned my Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Chicago in 2001, and my B.A. in philosophy and English (double major) from Albion College in 1994. If you attend either place based on my endorsement, I get a free set of steak knives.

Fall 2013 course: PHIL 347: Philosophy of Law (syllabus)
Winter 2014 course: PHIL 304: Business Ethics (syllabus)
Spring 2014 course: PHIL 488: Junior Seminar: Autonomy and Paternalism ) (syllabus)
