About CWU
Central Washington University understands the importance of building lives and preparing YOU for the future.
At Central, you are our top priority. We believe student ideas are the building blocks to effective learning. Our small class size promotes creativity and interaction. We believe learning happens inside and outside of the classroom. Our professors stimulate minds and promote lifelong success by teaching challenging courses and involving students in field research projects.
Central is located in the heart of Washington State in the beautiful city of Ellensburg. The CWU campus is less than two hours east of Seattle and three hours west of Spokane. With four distinct seasons, the area is perfect for those who love the outdoors. No matter where you live in Ellensburg, you’re just minutes away from snow boarding and skiing, hiking, floating the river, fly fishing, mountain biking, rock climbing, horseback riding, camping, and many other outdoor activities.
To help meet your needs, Central offers you the opportunity to attend classes and earn a degree close to home. Central's six university center locations are spread throughout Washington State in Des Moines, Lynnwood, Moses Lake, Pierce County, Wenatchee, and Yakima. The centers provide college juniors, seniors, and postbaccalaureate students easier access to bachelor and master degrees in some of our most popular programs.

Central's Collegiate Sport Clubs allow students the opportunity to participate in and represent Central in competitive sporting activities that are not available through Athletics. Central also has a quality intramural sports program that's recognized throughout the region, which allows amateur athletes an opportunity to participate in recreational and competitive activities with other Central students. More than 30 percent of CWU students participate in intramural sports.
Inspired by the vision of CWU students and located in the center of campus, Central's Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) is more than 220,000 square feet. It's the largest building on campus and one of the first facilities of its kind to combine both recreation and student life programs. The SURC is home to a fifty-foot rock wall, an indoor jogging track, a four-court gymnasium, strength training and cardiovascular areas, group exercise rooms, outdoor equipment rentals, and locker rooms with saunas.
