English Eligibility Math Eligibility

To determine your eligibility for English 101, choose the appropriate test score range.

SAT

  • 500 and above
    This score on the Verbal portion of the SAT makes a student eligible to take English 101.
  • 400-499
    This score on the Verbal portion of the SAT is below the score needed to be eligible for English 101 but is within the range to qualify to take the Compass writing placement test. A score of 75 on this test enables a student to be eligible for English 101. Any incoming freshman within this range attending an orientation will be required to take the Compass writing exam. The following web site will provide information and examples to help a student prepare: http://www.act.org/compass/sample/. These students also have the option of taking English 100T (transitional writing skills). Passing this course qualifies a student for English 101.
  • 399 and below
    This score on the Verbal portion of the SAT will require a student to take English 100T (transitional writing skills) and pass in order to become eligible for English 101.

ACT

  • 19 and above
    This score on the English portion of the ACT makes a student eligible to take English 101.
  • 17 and 18
    This score on the English portion of the ACT is below the score needed to be eligible for English 101 but is within the range to qualify to take the Compass writing placement test. A score of 75 on this test enables a student to be eligible for English 101. Any incoming freshman within this range attending an orientation you will be required to take the Compass writing exam. These students also have the option of taking English 100T (transitional writing skills). Passing this course qualifies a student for English 101.
  • 16 and below
    This score on the English portion of the ACT will require a student to take English 100T and pass it to become eligible for English 101 (transitional writing skills) and pass in order to become eligible for English 101.

Many majors require specific math courses. Please review the current CWU Course Catalog to determine if your intended major requires a specific math course.

SAT

  • 500 and above
    This score on the Mathematics portion of the SAT makes a student eligible for Math 100C*, 101, 102, 130, or 164**.
  • 400 to 499
    This score on the Math portion of the SAT is below the score needed to be eligible for university level mathematics but is within the range to qualify to take the Compass math placement test. A score of 50 on this test enables a student to be eligible for Math 100C*, 101, 102, 130, and 164**. Any incoming freshman within this range attending an orientation will be required to take the Compass math exam. The following web site will provide information and examples to help a student prepare: http://www.act.org/compass/samples. These students also have the option of taking Math 100B, Intro to Algebra. Passing this course with a C or better enables a student to register for Math 100C*, 101, 102, 130, or 164** without additional testing.
  • 399 and below
    This score on the Math portion of the SAT will require a student to take a Math 100 level class. A student passing Math 100B with a C or better will be eligible for Math 100C*, 101, 102, 130, 164**.

ACT

  • 19 and above
    This score on the Mathematics portion of the ACT makes a student eligible for Math 100C*, 101, 102, 130 or 164**.
  • 17 and 18
    This score on the Math portion of the ACT is below the score needed to be eligible for university level mathematics but is within the range to qualify to take the Compass math placement test. *Math 100C, Intermediate Algebra, is a developmental course for students aiming for admission to Pre-Calculus, Math 153.

**Math 164 is offered only for Elementary Education and Special Education majors with 45 credits or more.
