You're invited to attend a presentation of the research that four WGS minors have been doing this quarter. These projects arose out of an independent study that Dr. Pam McMullin-Messier ran as an extension of her Sociology of Sexualities course in the spring. The presentation will be on Thursday, December 5 at 3 p.m. in Farrell Hall room 211.
Wendy Bynum – “Sexual scripts and the influence of popular culture”: An examination of the intersection of music and sexuality through a review of the literature.
Jeff Cote – “Bullhead City: Exploring Oppression in the Queer Community Description”: In an original screenplay, the issue of depression in the queer community is thoroughly explored. The story also focuses on what has been coined as the "Emerald City effect," which is defined as desire queer individuals have to move to another place or otherwise change themselves in order to find personal happiness.
Kasey Eickmeyer – “When 'Comprehensive' Isn't Enough: Moving Toward a Socio-Emotional Approach to Sexuality Education": An critical examination of what is missing in comprehensive sexual education programs.
Kevan Gardner - "Sexing Up the Environment: The Rise of Ecosexual Identity": The term "ecosexual" is a relatively new one, having been in use less than a decade. Even so, it is appearing with increasing regularity. This presentation aims to explain the various meanings of the term and how it arose out of green living, ecofeminist theory, earth-based spirituality, and queer sensibility.
The students would welcome your feedback. Please come out and support your fellow WGS students!
