Theatre Rental

Terms and Conditions

 Department of Theater Arts rents costumes and props for the following activities:

  • CWU Departments, Student Organizations and Class Projects
  • Community and Regional Theatres
  • Church or Community Organizations
  • High Schools in the Northwest region

Prior to renting please read our entire rental contract.

1. Renter agrees to include the following text in the program for the production:
All (or a portion) of the  costumes and props in this production were provided through 
Theatre Rentals, Department of Theatre Arts, Central Washington University.
3.  Provide one copy of the printed program with the rental return.


Costumes and props are not rented for social events such as dances, parties, receptions or Halloween. We do not have Santa in stock at this time.

Bring check, cash, or authorized Purchase Order when you pick up your rental.  A deposit of at least 50% of the total rental must be left before any costume/prop leaves the shop. The amount of deposit will vary based on the total rental. The entire deposit will be applied to the total amount to of the rental and/or replacement of damaged items.  

Deposits for orders being shipped are required prior to the shipment leaving CWU.

Items not picked up can be shipped via UPS.  The rental contract and invoice will be adjusted to reflect shipping and insurance charges.

A late fee of 10% of the total rental cost will be incurred for each day the costume are past the contacted return date. All costumes must be returned during posted rental hours. If returned by UPS the return date will be the date the items are received by the costume shop.

Costumes can only be rented by appointment. For an appointment  complete the appointment request form.

Appointments for costume rental will be confirmed via email in advance of your visit.  Please do not arrive without an email confirmation.  Due to staff and student class schedules walks-in cannot be accommodated.

All items must be signed out by either the director/producer or costume designer of the project. Individual participants/actors should not be sent to select their own costumes. Only one person per production/project can sign out costumes/props. Only the individual who made the appointment, and one assistant, may pull from storage.  This is not a fitting session.  Please bring your exact measurement for each actor you are costuming.

Although minor alterations are allowed, garments must be returned as checked out. No dyeing, cutting, or distressing of costumes is allowed. No alteration should be done with tape of any kind.

Not all garments in our stock will be available at all times.  Many costumes are used by our in-house production program.

At this point, we do not rent or loan: wigs, dress forms, underwear, tools, or sewing supplies

Costume/Prop storage is located in a building adjacent to the Theatre Arts Department on the Ellensburg campus. A parking permit is required for stays longer than 15 minutes. Parking information can be obtained from the CWU Welcome Center on the corner of University Way and Pearl St. or by calling 509 963-3090.

An appointment to return your costumes should be set when you pick up your rentals.

As renter, you assumes all responsibility for loss and/or damages to items listed on his/her contract, whether caused by the renter or by a person in the cast or production crew.

Lost items must be assessed the replacement cost.

Failure to fulfill the rental contract will result in loss of rental privileges.

The renter is responsible for the appropriate cleaning of each costume/prop before return, based on the piece list supplied as part of the contract at check out.
