Teacher Certification

Adding Additional Endorsements

Certified teachers in Washington have three pathways to add an endorsement (Pathway I, Pathway II, and Pathway III).

PATHWAY I: Available for endorsements that are defined as closely aligned. Candidates need to meet 2 requirements:

1) 90 days of teaching in the current endorsement while holding that endorsement, and

2) Pass the current WEST-E or new NES exam (depending on the endorsement area) in the desired content area. A program and/or course work is not required.

If you are qualified for Pathway I, please work directly with your local Educational Service District in order to add the endorsement to your teaching certificate.

PATHWAY II: Available for endorsements that are defined as related. Candidates need to meet 3 requirements:

1) 90 days of teaching in the current endorsement while holding that endorsement (90 day requirement is waived for Elementary Education endorsed teachers wanting to add the Middle Level Math or Middle Level Science endorsements),

2) Pass the current WEST-E or new NES exam (depending on the endorsement area) in the desired content area, and

3) Successfully complete a minimum of 4 pedagogy assessments while teaching in the desired content area.

If interested in this Pathway, please submit the following information:

  • A written letter stating your request that also includes your contact information.
  • A written letter of support from your current Principal and/or Superintendent.
  • A copy of your current teaching certificate.
  • A copy of your WEST-E/NES scores showing you have passed the desired content area.

Once the CWU Teacher Certification Office receives the above information, a CWU Supervisor will be identified. The Supervisor will contact you to arrange dates and times for the assessments. There are a minimum of four that are required. Once you have successfully completed the assessments, the paperwork is sent to the CWU Teacher Certification Office. The additional endorsement is then added to your teaching certificate. The cost to pursue Pathway II through Central Washington University is roughly $1500. This fee does not include the $33 OSPI processing fee that is charged once the assessments are completed.

Please submit the above information to: CWU Teacher Certification, 400 East University Way, Ellensburg, WA 98926-7414 or email the material to weddingc@cwu.edu.

2) Pass the current WEST-E or new NES exam (depending on the endorsement area) in the desired content area.
