His poems have appeared widely in literary magazines and journals such as Poetry, The Georgia Review and Orion, and he has received many awards for his work including the James Hearst Poetry Prize, the inaugural Sparrow Prize in Poetry and the Hazel Lipa Environmental Chapbook Award. Sheffield was runner-up for the 2012 Emily Dickinson First Book Award and was a finalist for the Walt Whitman Award.
