Hours are flexible and may include both week days and week
end hours, as long as deadlines are met. Some aspects of this position may be
performed from home.
The Observer's graphic designer will be responsible for creating advertisements for the student Newspaper in a timely manner, meeting all deadlines assigned. Designer will attend Thursday staff meetings and have advertisement art prepared according to the standard sizes and resolution found in the Observer rate card. The designer will work with clients to develop a creative direction for advertisement art, and will coordinate such efforts with advertising sales associates. The graphic designer will also be responsible for designing promotional materials, such as logos, flyer's, business cards, signs and signage, when necessary.
*Experience in Adobe print programs, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Experience in Adobe's Web design programs, such as Dreamweaver and Flash, are recommended but not necessary.
*A portfolio of working design samples must be submitted for review/proof of experience and ability.
Purpose of Position:
Most print publications have a specialized graphic designers on staff to help develop the overall layout and design of their publication. Since the Observer has previously had no designer on staff, the layout and look of our paper has been determined by our section editors, who typically have no experience with graphic design, news layout, or InDesign (the program we use to layout our pages). Designers also often develop corporate communication strategies in addition to laying out news pages. We are need of assistance in the design of advertisements, promotional materials, as well as the help with the layout of our newspaper.
Working experience in a newspaper setting. Building portfolio pieces. Experience communicating with coworkers and clients to create effective promotional materials and advertisements for a variety of businesses offering all types of products and services. Time management skills.
