Having come to Central Washington University in fall 2007, Tom Spencer began as a TRiO advisor serving first generation, low income, and disabled students. He was thrilled to become a team member of Student Transitions and Academic Resources (STAR) in the spring of 2012. Tom has taught University 101 and the University 102 study skills class, presented at various professional conferences, and served on several university committees. He is an Army veteran having served in Operation Desert Storm, and was the first advisor to the CWU Veteran’s Club. Serving university students has been the most satisfying professional role Tom has experienced. As an advisor, he sees it as his job to use a holistic approach in helping students to set academic and career goals, and then to come up with a “solid game plan” for helping students to achieve those goals. Tom enjoys the unique and individual nature of each student he works with, and is energized by helping students to develop as they move closer to realizing their dreams.
Tom is from the small town of Los Lunas, New Mexico, but has lived in Washington for the past twelve years. With the idea of becoming an Academic Advisor, he received a Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from Washington State University in 2005. He has a family and two young boys, which he describes as a “non-stop adventure”. His hobbies include skiing, biking, and flying small aircraft. Tom has an open door policy, so stop by his office in Hertz hall to say hi!
