Academic Support

STAR is a partner in the division of Student Achievement within the department of Student Success at Central Washington University. As part of the STAR program’s commitment to student success, STAR advisors are well versed in a range of effective advising approaches – including developmental, intrusive, appreciative, and integrated advising strategies proven in college settings to be most effective with at-risk students and students with disabilities. Among our strategies are strategic goal planning, interactive learning, promotion of self awareness, self-determination, and self-reliance. “Use of these approaches has been proven to result in greater student retention among at-risk students, enhanced feelings of “belongingness” within the institution, and greater connectedness with their programs of study and the faculty delivering those programs.”Dana L. Heisserer, “Advising at-risk students in college and university settings”. College Student Journal. April 2012.
