Fortunato Placencia Biography

Name: Fortunato Placencia Jr.

Hometown: Cashmere WA

Major: Biology (biomedical)

Research or Scholarly Interests: Biomedical research and a career as a health care provider.

What do you like the most about being in SOLVER?
The opportunities, motivation, and support the staff provides for each scholar. Every member of the SOLVER community really wants you to succeed and is willing to go out of their way to make sure you get the help you need.

What drew you to majoring in "STEM" (the sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics)?
Volunteering at my local fire department for three years.  I was exposed to nature quite a bit when fighting wildland fires during the summers. It allowed me to gain a great appreciation for nature and biology. Volunteering as an EMT also helped spark my interest in medicine. This experience really helped guide me towards choosing a major that suited my interests the best.

What advice would you give to high school or college students who think they might be interested in STEM subjects?
It’s not a race! Take your time and choose a major that suits you the best. Learning is much easier and fun when you are interested in your classes.
