S&A Program Review:

Career Services-Westside Counselor – Jackie Johnson: Merridy Rennick, Career Services Counselor-Westside, and Jackie Johnson, Career Services Director, shared information on how the program has developed this year after Merridy Rennick was hired full-time. Previously her position was shared with Highline Community College and CWU Westside, now she works full time (cyclical--80%) for Central and she believes that this is making the difference. The Westside students voiced their needs for a Westside Career Counselor and this position is helping to fill the needs to these students. Ms. Rennick collaborates with faculty, teaches classes, works with clubs, created a “job club,” offers workshops and works with students individually. She was instrumental in the new course on career management, which the students appreciate, and is builds relationships with students and faculty and future employers. She is available to students in Des Moines, Pierce and Kent by email, phone and in classes.

Next week the program review will be the Publicity Center-Lola Gallagher giving their in-depth review presentation.

Supplemental Requests:

Veterans’ travel request – Paul Staybeck: The Veterans’ group is requesting $431.36 in supplemental funding to pay for travel and tickets for the Wenatchee Wild Hockey Game on February 27, 2010. They are expecting 25 student veterans to attend this event. Wenatchee Wendy’s is sponsoring shirts for the event. The tickets for the event are $10 each and they will be using 3 vans from the motor pool for travel to the game in Wenatchee. This will be discussed and voted on later in the meeting.

Green Dot facilitator training—SAFE and the Wellness Center—Nikki Newsome and Andrea Easlick: The funding request is for $14,385 to bring Dorothy Edwards, the creator of the Green Dot Program to Central Washington University to conduct her 4-day “Train the Facilitator” training. The Green Dot Program is a violence prevention program. The tentative dates for the training are May 10-13, 2010. There has been interest from other universities to bring this program to their campuses and many will take this opportunity which will help with the expenses to bring this speaker and program to campus. Currently we have two trainers on campus, but one will be graduating. The Green Dot program has already been implemented on campus through the Wellness Center in fall of 2009 with three classes; and with the opportunity to train more facilitators; this program can help prevent personal violence on campus. The request is for the full amount, but there is anticipated revenue, which will be returned to S&A. This request will be reviewed and voted on at the next S&A meeting.

Supplemental Request to be voted on:

Power of One: Nicholas Saine presented a request for $1,013.00 in supplemental funding for 4 students to attend the Power of One Conference at Washington State University and Idaho University on April 2-4, 2010. (Note: We may be receiving a request from GALA to also cover costs of going to the Power of One Conference.)

MOTION: Chris Goehner made a motion to approve $1013.00 in supplemental funding for four students to attend the Power of One Conference at Washington State University and Idaho University on April 2-4, 2010. Logan Bahr seconded. Motion carried with 2 abstentions.

CWU Mock Trial: Withdrew their request because they did not make it to the Regional Competition.

Veterans’ travel request – Paul Staybeck: The Veterans’ group is requesting $431.36 in supplemental funding to pay for travel and tickets for the Wenatchee Wild Hockey Game on February 27, 2010.

MOTION: Scott King made a motion to approve $431.00 in supplemental funds for travel and tickets for 25 student Veterans to attend the Wenatchee Wild Hockey Game on Saturday, February 27, 2010. Scott Robinson seconded. Motion carried with 1 abstention.

Other business:

Discussion related to the request to set our S&A fee for next year by the first of March:

MOTION: Logan Bahr made a motion to recommend the S&A fee be set at 0% for the FY 2010-2011. Kiley Baker seconded. Motion carried. (5 yes, 1 no and 3 abstentions.)

Discussion: The committee discussed many aspects of how the 0% fee increase will affect the funds available to the S&A committee. The message was not to blindly accept S&A fee increases and send a clear message to not putting the burden on the students. This decision could affect next year and the year after funding, but we cannot continue to put the burden on the students. Students do not want to pay for more their education. After this discussion, the question was called.

Schedule of Next Meeting: March 3, 2010.

Adjourn:

Scott Robinson moved to adjourn, Kiley Baker seconded. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
