When student behavioral problems occur, the university employs a team problem-solving approach. The Director of Residence Life, the Director of University Police and Parking Services, the Director of Wellness, and the Director of the Counseling Clinic join the Associate Dean of Student Success for Student Living, the Assistant to the Dean of Student Success, and the Coordinator of Student Rights and Responsibilities weekly to review incident reports filed by Resident Assistants (RAs) and Managers, as well as campus police reports which cover both on- and off- campus students. This student consultation team then deals with student behavioral problems generally reported to be in violation of the conduct proscriptions contained within the CWU student conduct code (WAC 106-120). It has been found that alcohol and other drug abuse is involved in the majority of student behavioral problems. The student consultation team works together to suggest intervention strategies that are considered to be the most appropriate and effective for eliminating specific negative student behaviors, especially those related to substance abuse. The team may suggest various forms of intervention including, but not limited to, the following: (1) a meeting with members of the Housing and New Student Programs staff; (2) a meeting with one of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Conduct Officer; or (3) a meeting with the Director of Wellness or other full-time, appropriate staff members; or (4) referral to other on and/or off campus agencies as identified. Official hearings in the Dean of Student Success office are conducted when it becomes apparent to the student consultation team that the initial and more informal forms of intervention with a student have been unsuccessful in positively modifying a student’s behavior. Other members of the University staff may be asked to assist the Student Consultation Team in creating the best course of action to respond to student behavioral issues.
