Athletic Compliance Committee Meeting Minutes
I. Welcome
Present: Ethan Bergman, Jack Bishop, Scott Drummond, Kathy Gaer-Carlton, Kari Gage, Dan Herman, Gary Hyatt, Rob Lowery, Pam McMullin-Messier, Tina Morefield, Bruce Porter, Staci Sleigh-Layman, Riley Wall
II. Actions
a. Sickle Cell Procedure
Kari Gage explained to the group that CWU’s Sickle Cell Trait Testing Waiver form was developed with review and approval by Business Services and Contracts and by our Assistant Attorney General. In addition, procedures to accompany the waiver form were developed as well. The procedures were basically taken from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) website: http://www.nata.org/sites/default/files/SickleCellTraitAndTheAthlete.pdf
The NCAA developed similar procedures. Kari added that she has been conducting end of year interviews with athletes and has given athletes a heads up regarding the new, required sickle cell testing in preparation for their return in August.
Motion to approve the Sickle Cell Trait Testing Waiver form and accompanying procedure with one modification by Staci Sleigh-Layman. Seconded by Dan Herman. No further discussion. Motion carried.
III. Items for Discussion
a. Suspended Players Returning
Gary Hyatt asked for feedback from committee members regarding suspended players returning to CWU. It was suggested that an exception to the current policy and procedure be developed so there is some flexibility in these situations. Gary will draft an exception policy and distribute to committee members via email, so we have something in place by fall quarter.
b. ISSG
Gary reported that he recently completed CWU’s Five-Year Institutional Self Study on Athletics. Contact Gary if you are interested in reviewing the report.
c. Missed class policy
Tabled until next meeting.
d. Priority Registration
Tabled until next meeting. However, a subcommittee (Gary Hyatt, Tina Morefield, & Rob Lowery) will meet over the summer to develop a proposed policy to bring forward early fall quarter.
A subcommittee (Scott Drummond, Kathy Gaer-Carlton, & Dan Herman) was established to review a possible appeal from a basketball player that may come forward this summer.
Kim will do a busy search and arrange the next meeting early fall quarter.
