Athletic Compliance Committee Meeting Minutes
I. Welcome
Present: Ethan Bergman, Kathy Gaer-Carlton, Scott Drummond, Kari Gage, Gary Hyatt, Rob Lowery, Tina Morefield, Rob Perkins, Bruce Porter, Staci Sleigh-Layman
II. Actions
a. None
III. Items for Discussion
a. Missed class policy
Gary explained that he and Ethan deal with issues involving missed classes for athletes on a regular basis. Ethan reported that the current policy language was developed as a result of academic affairs committee review. The Athletic Compliance Committee has tried to get university buy-in on the missed class policy, but it just hasn’t gone anywhere. It was suggested that Gary visit with the various university constituents: ADCO, Faculty Senate, Provost’s Council, ASCWU BOD, & Cabinet to get the policy vetted as a university policy rather than just a departmental policy. The policy could then be used for ALL students that participate in university activities, whether it’s athletics, music, theatre, etc. Gary will develop a rationale for the policy and it will be brought back to the next meeting for review one more time before Gary starts vetting it through the various constituencies.
b. Sickle Cell Testing
Kari explained that at the recent NCAA conference, sickle cell trait testing was approved and will go into affect August 1, 2012. At that time, the NCAA will require all NCAA student-athletes to have knowledge of their sickle cell trait status before they participate in any intercollegiate athletic event, including strength and conditioning sessions, practices, competitions, etc. If for some reason a student does
not want to do the test, a waiver form will be available for them to sign. Kari added that her responsibility will be to educate the athletes and raise awareness of the sickle cell trait. The hope is that the student-athletes will choose to have the testing rather than opting to sign a waiver. The sickle cell trait testing document will be reviewed by Business Services and Contracts and also by our Assistant Attorney General. It will be brought back to the committee for review at our next meeting.
c. Drug & Alcohol policy
Tabled until next meeting.
d. Priority Registration
Tabled until next meeting. Tina distributed two documents relating to priority registration. Please review these prior to our next meeting.
Kim will arrange our next meeting for some time in May.
