Looking Forward to Fall

It has been a very busy summer, here, at CWU Recreation, preparing for fall 2018 and the new academic season. With a new year brings new and fun opportunities that incoming and current CWU students can enjoy. Check out a few fun and exciting updates on this summer as well as what to look forward to this fall.

Recreation Expansion Project
As September 19th quickly approaches, the newest addition to CWU Recreation’s offerings is set to open in October of 2018. The project is currently on-track and running smoothly with our partners in Operations.

The new track and field sports complex (dubbed the Recreation Expansion Project) is a 370,000 square foot facility complete with an artificial turf infield, fully lit, and grandstands with 600 spectator seating. This 400-meter all-weather track will meet all NCAA competition specifications and will accommodate all running events as well as multi-directional runways for jump events. Directly adjacent to the track will be a throws venue to hold hammer, shot put, javelin, and discus events. Restrooms and storage facilities will also be provided, along with food track capabilities and a safe and protected space for students to recreate at night.

The turf infield will bring about new and exciting programming opportunities for CWU students, allowing us to host intramural tournaments, sport clubs competitions, and open recreational hour activities.
This is a student funded project, and was unanimously passed in September of 2017 by the Student Recreation Advisory Board.

Group Fitness Classes Are Included!
We’ve got exciting news: Starting fall of 2018, Group Fitness classes within the CWU Recreation Center will now be included in your Recreation Membership.
What does that mean?

You can attend any of the scheduled Group Fitness classes as long as you have a valid CWU Recreation Membership.
Note: RecWell memberships will allow for Group Fitness class ONLY during times when the membership is valid.

How do I sign up and attend classes?

It’s an easy 5 step process!
1) Simply head on over to the Rec Fusion Portal at recreation.cwu.edu.
2) Log in with your CWU single sign-on info or create a new profile on the top right corner of the homepage.
3) Click the Group Fitness Icon on the main page
4) Select “Group Fitness” from the left-hand navigation bar
5) Then, take your pick of classes!

When you click on a class or “program”, you will have the ability to “register” for that class at that class time. Once you have registered, you are ready to go!

Show up at the class time you registered for and check in with your group fitness instructor. They will check you in, get you the equipment you need, and you will be on your way to some serious fitness fun!

Participants will have the option of finishing breakfast items such as juice, coffee, and doughnuts as they complete each kilometer of the race. Early registration will run from September 20 to October 2. Participants may register up until 9:30am on the day of the race, but will not be guaranteed a race shirt if the early registration date is not met.

Happy 10-years to the Challenge Course
Yes, that’s correct, it’s been 10 years since we opened the Challenge Course in 2008. Melissa and her staff have been hard at work planning Weekly Challenge’s for just this occasion, which is open to CWU Recreation members, non-members, and the Ellensburg community, every Wednesday. Climb the 50-foot Alpine Tower and take a ride in our Giant Swing. No experience is necessary, but close-toed shoes and active wear are required for participation.

The cost is $5 for current CWU students | Central Washington University - Recreation members, non-students and non-members is $10. Participants must meet at the Challenge Course at 5 p.m.

Please contact Melissa Robertson at Challenge.Course@cwu.edu or by calling (509) 963-3539 for more information.

Get Outside with OPR this Fall
Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals will be open and ready for any type of trips or rentals that may spark your interest as the weather cools. Stop by their store front, on the corner of the Student Union and Recreation Center, and pick up a Fall Adventure Guide, which includes all of the fun events, programs, and trips OPR does, each quarter.

A few of those events will include the Warren Miller Film and Banff Mountain Film Festival this November, as well as a brand new film, coming to campus, about Fred Becky.

Sport Club Demo Days
Here is your chance to meet sport club members and learn about all of the sport clubs we have on campus, and how you can get involved. Join us on Tuesday, September 18th for the full array of Sport Club opportunities in the SURC. Pick up a Demo Days schedule of events at the CWU Recreation Center front desk. If you want to learn about any of our clubs before this event, visit our website at cwu.edu/sport-clubs.

Get Toasty with Wellington this Fall
Join the CWU Challenge Course and Campus Activities as they host the annual Wellington’s Wildfire during Homecoming Week 2018. Meet us out at the Challenge Course on October 10 for a bonfire, good music, a chance to meet other students and student athletes, as well as s’mores.
Questions? Please contact us at (509) 963-3539 or by emailing Challenge.Course@cwu.edu.

Climb Your Way to New Heights
The climbing wall is jam-packed with programs for you to participate in during fall quarter, starting with youth programs.

Join the climbing wall staff every Sunday for Kid’s Rock, from 2pm-4pm. Parents must be present, but staff will belay the children during that time. For more information and to register your child, please visit our website at cwu.edu/climbing-wall.

Clinics are also a great way to get involved, and our Top-Rope Belay clinic seems to be a fan-favorite. This clinic teaches all of the necessary skills to pass the belay exam. Pre-registration is recommended, however, so visit our website at cwu.edu/climbing-wall/programs-and-events for more information.
The Cranksgiving climbing competition is another fun event that happens every fall quarter on campus, and features door prizes with registration. Dress up in your favorite Halloween costume and climb to your hearts content. Prizes for best costumes, door prizes, and of course- skills. All experiences welcome. There will also be a youth climbing division for those interested!

Cost is $25 for pre-registration for CWU Recreation members and $30 non-members, or $35 for day of registration.
