CWU University Recreation is hosting the 19th annual Spring Fling AAU Basketball Tournament next weekend, March 8 to 10, in the Recreation Center. This tournament features girls and boys divisions from grades 3 to 8 and is a region-wide event, bringing 53 teams (37 from outside Kittitas County), 535 players and approximately 1,200 spectators to the Central Washington University campus. Games begin at 5 p.m. on Friday and at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The 2013 Spring Fling AAU Tournament has been coordinated entirely by two CWU Exercise Science majors, Alexander Lee and Halee Boni. Lee is currently a University Recreation employee and Boni is completing a 12-credit internship with University Recreation.
This is the fourth year University Recreation has hosted AAU tournaments on campus, as the events continue to maintain popularity among local and traveling teams. The tournaments are also a valuable boost to the local economy, attracting over 200 hotel reservations and becoming a source of revenue for many local restaurants and businesses.
