Family Policy & Family Hours

The Recreation Center has specific guidelines for family members under the age of 18, to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all of our members.

Family Hours have been designated from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.  These hours have been established in order to provide Recreation Center Members the opportunity to bring their family to use the Recreation Center.  Listed below are some policies to help everyone who is eligible use the Recreation Center.

  1. Children ages 6-13 are allowed to join their parent, who is a member, during Family Hours, at no additional cost, for activities in the four court gymnasium, on the jogging track, or in the climbing wall.  (All other areas are have too many safety risks to allow youth to participate.)

  2. Children ages 5 and under are NOT allowed to enter the facility during family hours.  (This is a health and safety risk for these young children.)

  3. The parent must be present and actively involved with the child in the chosen activity.  (Instructional youth climbing programs are offered.)

  4. A member may NOT bring children with them who are not their legal dependents.     (Spaces within the Recreation Center can be reserved for private events for these types of gatherings.)

  5. Guest Passes can be purchased for use during Family Hours, but each adult guest and each child guest must purchase an individual guest pass at the current rate.

  6. Dependents age 14 and older are eligible to purchase a membership to the Recreation Center but those who are age 14-16 must be supervised by a parent at all times.

  7. Dependents age 17 and older are eligible to purchase a regular Recreation Center membership.

Weight Room Policies

  1. Personal belonging may not be placed on equipment or on the floor and should remain in cubbies or lockers. University Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  2. Personal trainers not employed by University Recreation are not allowed to provide services in the facility.
  3. Please be respectful of all participants, staff, and equipment.
  4. Horseplay, cursing, rowdy behavior, loud and distracting noises are not permitted.
  5. Denim or jeans with metal rivets, street shoes, and open-toed shoes are not allowed.
  6. Individual workout towels are available at no cost. These towels must remain in the weight room at all times. Please place your used towel in a towel bin before leaving the weight room.
  7. Clean all equipment with sanitizer spray and towel immediately after each use.
  8. Use of collars is mandatory.
  9. Spotters are always recommended.  Please ask staff to assist if working out individually.
  10. Slamming or dropping weights at any time is not permitted.
  11. Re-rack weights, dumbbells, and bars after use.
  12. Keep equipment in designated areas. Never lean weights or bars against walls or mirrors.
  13. Use of lifting chalk is prohibited.
  14. Report injuries, damaged equipment, or other safety concerns to staff immediately.

Boxing Area

  1. Must use handwraps and gloves when striking the bag (available for check-out at the Membership Desk).
  2. Speedbags and jump ropes may be checked out at the Membership Desk.
  3. Shoes must be worn at all times.
  4. No sparring or physical contact of any kind.
  5. Keep heavy bag under control.  Avoid needless, excessive swinging of the bag.
  6. Do not hang from the heavy bag.
  7. Do not over tighten the speed bag deck.
  8. Report injuries, damaged equipment, or other safety concerns to staff immediately.  

Cardio Areas

  1. Personal belonging may not be placed on equipment or on the floor and should remain in cubbies or lockers. University Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  2. Please be respectful of all participants, staff and equipment.
  3. Find a staff member to change the TV channels or radio station.
  4. Individual workout towels are available throughout the facility at no cost. These towels must remain in the cardio area at all times. Please place your used towel in a towel bin before leaving the cardio area.
  5. Clean all equipment with sanitizer spray and towel immediately after each use.
  6. Keep equipment in designated areas. Never lean weights or bars against walls or mirrors.
  7. Report injuries, damaged equipment, or other safety concerns to staff immediately.  

Fitness Rooms

  1. Fitness rooms are available for use throughout the day, if not otherwise reserved. University Recreation reserves the right to change the schedule as needed. Schedules are posted outside each room.
  2. For assistance opening and closing the rooms, please contact the Membership Desk staff to unlock the room.
  3. Appropriate athletic attire is required at all times. Non-athletic shorts/pants, muscle shirts, denim pants, open-toed shoes, and street shoes are prohibited.
  4. Do not remove equipment from the fitness rooms. Do not bring bikes into the fitness rooms.
  5. No sparring, striking, or physical contact of any kind in this space.
  6. Please place all personal belongings in cubbies or lockers. University Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items

Locker Rooms

  1. For your privacy, please keep cell phones in lockers or backpacks.
  2. Shower towel service is available for $2.00 per towel at the Membership Desk.  Please return used towels to the towel drop location at the Membership Desk.
  3. All open lockers are Day-use lockers available for use.
  4. Lockers are available to rent. They are rented quarterly or annually.  Quarterly lockers expire the last day of the membership period. 
  5. Lockers must be cleaned out prior to expiration.  Upon expiration a Staff member will remove your items and they will be held for 90 days before they are sent to Property Management.    
  6. If you are bringing a child with you who is of the opposite gender and 3+ years old, please use the Family/Assisted locker room.
  7. Please do not leave belongings unattended or unlocked (even under benches). Locks can be purchased at the Membership Desk.
  8. Please be courteous when spraying perfume and cologne.

Indoor Track

  1. Track spikes and bare feet are not permitted.
  2. Walk in the inside lane, and jog/run in outside lanes.
  3. Running Direction: Mon., Wed., and Fri. clockwise; Tues., Thurs., Sat. and Sun. counter-clockwise
  4. Walk or jog no more than two abreast so others have room to pass.
  5. 8 Laps = 1 Mile
  6. Please do not spit on the floors or walls.
  7. Stretching areas are located adjacent to the track and in the hallway nearest the Fitness rooms.
  8. Free weights less than 15 pounds may be carried around the track; other equipment should not be brought onto the track
  9.  

Basketball/Multi-Activity Courts

  1. Court schedules are posted in the hallway outside each court. University Recreation reserves the right to change the schedule as needed.
  2. Unless otherwise reserved for use, courts are open on a first-come, first-served basis. Court activities will be prioritized as listed, with each activity provided at least one court each hour:
  • Court A: Badminton, Pickleball, general fitness activities
  • Court B: Basketball, Volleyball
  • Court C: Basketball, Volleyball
  • Court D: Basketball, Volleyball
  1. All games are self-monitored.  Good sportsmanship and proper conduct are expected at all times. The use of offensive language and profanity is not permitted.
  2. Equipment for court use may be checked out at the Membership Desk. Individuals with items not returned at the end of the night will be assessed a $3 restocking fee.
  3. Use of outside equipment is prohibited on the courts.
  4. Volleyball, Badminton, or Pickleball nets can be checked out at the membership desk. Nets must be returned to the desk after use.
  5. Appropriate athletic attire and shoes are required at all times. Basketball players are permitted to go shirtless for team identification, but shirts must be worn before and after games.
  6. Grabbing or hanging on the net or rim is prohibited.
  7. Sweat towels are prohibited in the court space.

Climbing Policy

  1. Every participant must read, understand and complete the Climbing Waiver prior to climbing at the wall
  2. All participants must swipe their CWU connection card at the Climbing Wall entrance before climbing.
  3. Proper athletic attire including closed toe shoes is required while climbing.
  4. Rental Shoes are available at the Membership Desk. Socks are required with rental shoes.
  5. Loose chalk is NOT permitted in the climbing wall.  Chalk must be contained in a chalk ball.
  6. Headphones must be worn in one ear only while climbing or belaying.
  7. Only CWU carabineers and belay devices are to be used. Personal harnesses manufactured by approved companies, climbing shoes, and chalk balls are permitted.
  8. Bouldering without a rope is permitted to the 12 ft. bouldering limit.  Spotters are recommended while bouldering.
  9. There is no certification to climb on Top Rope.  Staff is available to belay any climber.  Climbers must tie in with a figure eight knot.
  10. Top Rope belayers must be belay certified at CWU. Climbers interested in belaying must pass a belay test, display appropriate card, and use proper belay techniques. Classes are available to teach proper techniques.
  11. Lead climbers and belayers must be lead certified at CWU.
  12. Any climber may be asked by climbing wall staff to stop or change any activity or behavior that is judged to be inappropriate, disruptive or unsafe in any manner, not limited to those rules listed above.

Sauna Policies

  1. Showers are required before entering the sauna.
  2. Workout clothes may not be worn in the sauna.
  3. Only swimwear may be worn in the sauna; if not wearing swimwear, please maintain modesty by using and covering yourself with a towel.
  4. Sandals and flip-flops are the only footwear allowed in the sauna.
  5. Allow yourself at least 5 minutes after exercising to cool down before entering the sauna.
  6. Limit yourself to15-20 minutes. Those feeling dizzy or faint should leave the sauna immediately, & consult a physician before returning.
  7. Exercise of any kind is prohibited in the sauna.
  8. The following individuals should not use the sauna: those with heart disease, diabetes, high or low blood pressure, circulatory or respiratory problems, seizures, epilepsy, pregnant women, and those who are using prescribed or illegal drugs or under the influence of alcohol.
  9. Children ages 13 and under are not permitted in the sauna.

Children between the ages of 14-17 must be accompanied by an adult in the sauna at all times.

Dress Code

For your health and safety, the Student Recreation Advisory Committee and University Recreation revised and better defined the facility dress code policy.  The following articles of clothing do not adhere to the dress code policy.

  1. Cutoff shirts exposing 4 or more inches from the armpit, or fail to provide ample coverage of the chest and/or back areas
  2. Shorts that do not completely cover the backside
  3. Open toed shoes
  4. Denim pants, or pants with rivets, clasps, or zippers

Cancellations & Refunds

University Recreation is dedicated to providing exceptional programs, services, and memberships and anticipates equivalent accountability in return.  When a customer decides to register, the department commits to the preparation and delivery of facilities, activities, events, and/or services.

Cancelation and a request of a refund can be made with reasonable cause and will be processed fairly, taking into account preparation, expenses, processing, and delivery of the program/service.
