Never failing to attract acts for all audiences, Central will host the perfect show for poetry lovers and comedy fans alike. Campus Activities is bringing the always-unexpected slam poet Katie Wirsing to campus Thursday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) Theatre. Wirsing will perform her poems concerning gender, love, spirituality and sexuality at this free show.
Through her performances Wirsing proves that poetry can be hilarious and comedy can encompass the same serious and controversial issues as poetry. Her audiences can expect anything from issues the LGBT community face to the art of Jell-O wrestling. According to her website, Wirsing is “fluent in the language of living” and claims she has “never been afraid of difficult truths.”
After coming out as a lesbian in high school, Wirsing found acceptance in the poetry scene in her hometown of Boulder, Colorado. Since her career began, Wirsing has opened for the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, the queer women’s festival AquaGirl, Flobots and comedian Suzanne Westenhoefer. Wirsing’s poetry has also been featured on NPR, the BBC, numerous local radio stations and countless college campuses.
