Central Washington University’s Publicity Center received three ADDY awards from the local chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) at a presentation March 28 in Yakima, Wash. The Chinook Awards recognize excellence in printing, publishing and broadcasting produced in Central and Southeastern Washington. One entry then went on to pick up an award at the regional level, and has been entered at the national level.
The Yakima Advertising Federation presented Silver ADDY awards to Publicity Center designers Dalila Copeland, Zach LaMance and Justin Beckman. Copeland and LaMance are graduating from CWU this spring with degrees in the graphic design program. Beckman is employed as the senior graphic designer in the Publicity Center, where he supervises student creative staff including Copeland and LaMance.
Copeland’s “Green Dot” entry was a multi-faceted campaign designed to bring awareness to the CWU Wellness Center’s “Green Dot” program, a national movement to empower people to speak out against violence. Components of the campaign included posters, green dot messaging on sidewalks and a short film.
LaMance’s entry for “Ropeless Rodeo” consisted of poster and water bottle design for an annual event hosted by CWU’s Climbing Club and Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals (OPR), as part of the Northwest Collegiate Climbing Circuit (NC3).
Beckman’s poster campaign, “Say This, Not That,” focused on using appropriate language in reference to groups and individuals. The campaign was created for CWU’s Equity and Services Council, a body of student organizations that promotes inclusivity. Beckman's design earned a Silver ADDY from the Northwest region as well, and has moved on to compete nationally.
Conducted annually by the AAF, the local ADDY awards contest is the first of a three-tier national competition. Winning entries have been forwarded on to the regional competition, the Northwest ADDYs, where they will compete for the chance to show at the national ADDY Awards competition later this spring.
