The Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals (OPR) Speaker Series continues March 30 with a visit from local mountaineering veterans Jens Holsten and Fred Beckey. Holsten will kick off the event at 7 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) Theatre, followed by Beckey at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the door and are $10 for students and $15 for general admission.
Holsten, a Pacific Northwest native, is a mountaineer constantly searching for his next challenge. Holsten’s presentation will focus on his adventures from the past year, when he travelled south to Patagonia and made history locally in the Stewart Range—making the first winter ascent of Colchuck Peak’s Northeast Buttress.
At 90 years old, Beckey is well known as one of the most successful and eccentric mountain climbers alive, and he still climbs mountains to this day. After growing up in Seattle and learning to climb in the Cascades, Beckey went on to make more first ascents than any other North American climber. After his presentation, Beckey will be on hand to sign copies of one of his many published guide books.
This event is a fundraiser for the Washington Climber Coalition, who is trying to build restroom facilities in Vantage.
