CWU Publicity Center wins Best Video Design in 2015 Expression Awards

When Megan Schmitt submitted entries in the 8th annual Expression Awards competition for digital signage and content, sponsored by Visix, Inc., she felt confident that they would show well against other entries from across the country. The work created by CWU Publicity Center staff not only won Best Video Design but actually swept that category with two finalist awards, and received a finalist and two honorable mention awards in the Best Still Design category as well.

“I was pretty excited when I read the email announcing the awards,” said Schmitt, a junior Public Relations major at Central Washington University who manages the Wildcat Access digital advertising program on campus. “I had a feeling we’d win at least one because our designers and videographer are really talented. It was great to get the recognition, especially competing against other colleges like Boston University and University of Wisconsin.”
The Best Video Design was awarded for a 15-second “ASCWU Elections” spot, with design elements created by senior Graphic Design major Taylor Froberg and motion graphics created by junior Film and Video Studies major Catherine Johnson. Finalist awards in the video category were for “Mapworks” with design by Justin Beckman, Publicity Center’s senior graphic designer, and motion graphics by Johnson; and for “SEOI’s” filmed and edited by Johnson.

The Publicity Center was also a finalist in the Best Still Design category for “Wildcat Shop Spring Sale” designed by Beckman, and received honorable mention nods for “Fiddler on the Roof” designed by senior Graphic Design major Kristina Von Essen and “Cornhole Tournament” by Beckman.

According to the Visix, Inc. website, the competition was launched in 2008 to recognize the best content designs created for use with its AxisTV digital signage software, which is utilized by the Wildcat Access program. Marketing communications and digital signage design specialists judged more than 300 entries and announced the winners May 12. Judges’ decisions were based on technical design, creativity and communications effectiveness.

“This is the best work we’ve seen in eight years,” said Debbie DeWitt, Marketing Communications Manager for Visix, in a release published on the company website. “The designs entered in the 8th Annual Expression Awards provide a bold example of the innovative ideas and design capabilities of our customers. We’re seeing more sophisticated video work, better graphic design and a better understanding of engagement and measurement techniques across the board."

As an award recipient, the Publicity Center will receive a GoPro HERO3+ Silver camera, and a mounted, personalized Expression Award. The winning entry will also be recognized in Visix’s e-newsletter and press release announcing winners, be featured on Visix websites and social media, and have use of the official Expression Award winner logo.
