Cats at the Capitol

Have an itching for a particular social issue? Unhappy with the status quo? Or maybe you’re an advocacy-fanatic and you’re looking to further practice your first amendment rights?

Cats at the Capitol welcomes all students to their annual march on Olympia. This lobbying event will be an all-day event, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26. Lunch, dinner and a t-shirt will be provided to all participants.

Student funding and budgeting issues will be a hot ticket discussion this year, with college affordability, tuition freezes and student loan transparency being at the forefront of discussion. Students will also have the ability to meet and speak with prominent lawmakers and legislative influencers such as Senator Hans Zeiger, Representative Melanie Stambaugh and Representative Drew Hansen.

ASCWU VP for Legislative Affairs Michael Scott has been working on organizing this event. This will be Scott’s second lobby day, with his first being last year. His favorite part of the event is connecting students with the lawmakers that will make a direct impact for the type of legislation that students will want.

“There’s nothing like being there in person. Lobby day is a chance for an all expense, paid day of shaking hands, looking these people in the eye and talking about what Central needs and how we can be the best school we can be,” Scott said.
