Why energy studies at CWU?

There is a decline in the size of the workforce in the energy sector in the U.S. Between 2013 and 2017 more than 1,000 employees will have retired from Bonneville Power Administration alone creating a severe need for qualified employees in the energy sector.

The Institute for Integrated Energy Studies provides a unique interdisciplinary approach to provide education, research and training in the areas of conventional and renewable energy resources. It emphasizes field learning experiences and an integrative approach to energy management.

Learn about energy systems and resources, while gaining comprehensive understanding for the social, political, economic, and environmental processes that shape energy systems.

The Integrated Energy Policy specialization trains students in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), planning, and policy analysis as it relates to energy production, distribution and consumption with particular attention to the environment.

The Integrated Energy Business specialization focuses on the areas of marketing, supply chain logistics, and economics as it relates to energy production distribution and consumption.

Students who are passionate about energy technologies, physical understandings of power systems, and the environmental implications of energy production, distribution, and consumption should choose the Integrated Power Systems specialization.

Energy production and management impacts just about everything on the planet. CWU is the first university in the Pacific Northwest with an institute that addresses energy issues from both conventional and alternative energy sources, with a special focus on energy management.

No other university in the state offers this particular type of interdisciplinary education in response to current and future professional work place needs. At CWU, you’ll have the unique opportunity to engage in an extended, for-credit apprenticeship in the energy business, such as Bonneville Power, Puget Sound Energy, or the Teanaway Solar Reserve.

In 2013, Elvin Delgado, the director and co-founder of the institute, was among 28 scholars globally selected to participate in the ‘energy-water’ nexus training funded by the National Science Foundation Pan-American Advanced Studies Institute (NSF-PASI).
