ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Central Washington University Board of Trustees today approved a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the United Faculty of Central (UFC). UFC members ratified the agreement last week. The four-year agreement is retroactive to September 1, 2013, and expires August 31, 2017.
CWU President James L. Gaudino and UFC President Roxanne Easley agreed that students will benefit from this contract.
“CWU students have access to research and scholarship that is distinctive in Washington,” Gaudino said, “and we believe that academic opportunity and rigor will only improve with this contract. Students will know that Central is committed to recruiting, retaining, and rewarding faculty who bring a quality commitment to teaching and scholarship.”
Easley added, “The faculty voted overwhelmingly to approve this contract. Improving faculty salaries in a national market and reinforcing our commitment to faculty and student research collaboration are major faculty concerns, and this contract makes progress on both of these fronts. This contract will further Central’s academic mission and students will see their learning conditions improve because faculty working conditions have improved.”
The agreement increases faculty compensation and reward, including across-the-board salary adjustments for faculty in each year of the contract—5 percent, retroactive to September 1; 4 percent on September 1, 2014 and 2015; and 3 percent on September 1, 2016.
The new contract also replaces the current merit system with a post-tenure review reward system for full professors and chairs, and adds a development fund pool for senior lecturers. The contract also improves and protects the faculty work that supports CWU’s academic mission through recognition of faculty service responsibilities, especially those of department chairs.
Gaudino and Easley said CWU and UFC look forward to working together to implement the contract.
