Overarching Themes in Responses to the Strategic Planning Online Survey

The following is an effort to synthesize comments received from an online strategic planning survey.

Goal 6: Sustain intellectually stimulating, civil, and productive campuses and workplaces.

  • I. Foster and promote opportunities for stimulating and diverse intellectual conversations, by
    • A. Continuing to support such activities as the Presidential Speaker Series, one book-one campus, Performing Arts Series, and college, department, and program-sponsored speaker series.
    • B. Promoting diverse discussions and activities through incentives.
    • C. Bringing balance to discussions and removing barriers to honest discussion.
  • II. Continue to create a caring, civil, disciplined and diverse intellectual community by
    • A. Creating a shared understanding of what diversity is and means for the university as a community.
    • B. Continuing to reinforce the positive and productive aspects of intellectual and cultural diversity.
    • C. Continuing to provide training opportunities that allow groups and departments to learn and practice new skills and ensuring top-level participation and support for them.
    • D. Promoting the twin goals of personal accountability for civility and excellence in performance.
    • E. Fostering and promoting a sense of community throughout the entire university, including creating more university-wide traditions.
    • F. Fostering creativity and intelligent humor.
  • III. Hire and retain a highly qualified and diverse employee pool.
    • A. Encourage opportunities that support professional and human development as a means of retaining highly qualified people.
    • B. Expanding opportunities for staff to engage in professional development, obtain degrees, and participate in the life of the university.
    • C. Seek creative ways to acknowledge student, staff, faculty, and administrative excellence
  • IV. Improve communication on campus at all levels
