Overarching Themes in Responses to the Strategic Planning Online Survey

The following is an effort to synthesize comments received from an online strategic planning survey.

Goal 2: Provide for an outstanding academic and student life at the university centers.

(All subsidiary goals from Goal 1 that also relate to the centers (excluding, for example, goals related explicitly to the freshman and sophomore years), plus)

  • I. Strengthen academic and student life at the university centers by
    • A. Involving center-based students in Ellensburg campus activities.
    • B. Promoting discipline-based student organizations, developing student services appropriate to the needs of non-traditional students and that are commensurate with the student activity fees that are assessed, providing speakers at the centers, providing mechanisms to strengthen center students' sense of involvement in the university, and disseminating information to center students about available services and opportunities.
    • C. Supporting the library's efforts to improve access to information around the world and to create liaisons between librarian and academic programs.
    • D. Strengthening department-level support and oversight of academic programs at the centers, fostering relationships and cohesion between center-based and Ellensburg staff to eliminate feelings of competition, and ensuring that faculty who teach at a distance spend some time at the centers to touch base with students.
    • E. Educating faculty about the diverse populations at the university centers, the distinct needs, abilities, and experiences they present, and the wealth of information about adult learning and degree attainment.
    • F. Standardizing roles and services at each center and doing what is necessary to create the feel of a full-time university.
    • G. Stepping up advertising at the university centers, providing linkages to the community college websites, and promoting the sale of CWU logo items that are not cost prohibitive as a means of building community and marketing.
    • H. Researching and responding to the needs of the communities surrounding the centers.
    • I. Improving transfer agreements with community colleges and developing orientation programs that meet the unique needs of the centers.
  • II. Strengthen the university centers by
    • A. Coming to agreement on the role of the centers relative to the role of the residential campus.
    • B. Developing a coherent strategy for determining which, when, and how programs will be offered at university centers.
    • C. Providing greater variety in programs offered at the centers, including high demand programs, and ensuring that course offerings are consistent with demand.
    • D. Providing more consistent outreach and informational pieces to the centers.
    • E. Achieving greater equity in course scheduling between the centers and the community college campuses.
