The New Yorker magazine calls the a cappella group, Chanticleer, "the world's reigning male chorus." This Grammy Award-winning ensemble, based in San Francisco, California, is known for its original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to pop.

Founded by Louis Botto in 1978, the group first formed to perform music of the medieval and Renaissance periods, which Botto was studying at the time. He formed the group, using only male voices. He followed the Renaissance church tradition of using only male voices. performed their first show that year in San Francisco and named themselves after the character Chanticleer, from Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

Over the past thirty years, the group has gained fame through tireless performing, touring, and recording. More than seventy-five men have sung in Chanticleer, and the group has recorded over thirty albums since its inception.
