Bill Bowers

In this 70-minute joy ride, actor, mime, and educator Bill Bowers shares hilarious, heartbreaking, and unbelieveable true stories from both his career and his lifelong exploration of the role silence plays in all our lives. IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING takes the audience on a scenic tour of Bill's life thus far — from growing up gay in the wilds of Montana, to his outrageous jobs as a performer, to the whirlwind of working on Broadway, and studying with the legendary Marcel Marceau. Compared to the work of Caludia Shear, Lisa Kron, and David Sedaris, IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING is an autobiographical tour-de-force. The first and last sections are performed as mime, with the central core of the narrative told through acting and storytelling. Connecting the segments are several recurring images: the Heyokay — a type of Native American shaman— and the Trail of Tears, the infamous Nez Perce winter trek that passed through the area that would become Bower's childhood home. Throughout the performance Bowers punctuates his stories with the poetic movements of a mime, but in a conversational way. Not until the end does he finally perform in full mime, a short theatrical piece called MONTANA MOON

A student of the world-renowned mime Marcel Marceau, Bowers performs master classes and conducts workshops about the art of miming in many countries and universities, including Harvard University, Rutgers University, and the Institute for Arts and Humanities Education. Bowers has appeared On Broadway in THE LION KING, has performed mime on an Amish Colony, and was the drama coach for the Israeli Olympic Ice Dancing team. At presently he teaches at New York University's Steinhardt School of Education, the Paper Mill Playhouse, and Very Special Arts, a program that provides arts for the disabled. Bowers stresses movement and non-verbal communication, creative problem solving, nonviolent conflict resolution, and other valuable skills to his students.
