Guests: Richard DeShields
Information items:
1. At 8:30 AM: Richard DeShields to give an update on the University Housing Master Plan and the new Barto Hall
Richard DeShields gave an update on Wendell Hill Hall (Student Village South). It is currently at 85% occupancy. We have a total of 2770 beds in our residence halls and we are over 2700 with contracts, so far. Basically, we are full. He added that the Housing Department can do some reorganizing in some of the dorms if they need to accommodate additional contracts. The substantial completion date of Wendell Hill Hall is the end of August. Approximately 1000 returning students have chosen to continue to live in the dorms. Mr. DeShields also reported that during winter quarter, when they start marketing the residence halls, they do a study that compares expenses of living on campus to the expenses of living off campus. These expenses include rent, food, and utilities. He added that two years ago University Housing started a parent program, where they market residence hall living to parents. They can show that students who live on campus have better GPA's. Mr. DeShields then gave an update on the predesign of a new residence hall, which would be located where Barto Hall is currently located. He explained that students were surveyed to see what kind of living spaces they would like to see. They received a great deal of feedback. The timeline of the project was discussed, and Mr. DeShields explained that he would like to start discussions with Susan Musselman on bonding for the project. The project cost summary was reviewed and discussed as well.
