I. Action Items
1. Approval of Cabinet Minutes from July 23, 2008
Motion to approve the Cabinet Minutes from July 23, 2008 as presented by Ms. Gray. Seconded by Dr. Swiney. No further discussion. Motion carried.
II. Discussion Items
1. Enrollment Planning
Dr. Street distributed the matrix regarding Activities and Outcomes Related to Fall 08 Enrollment. The group reviewed and discussed each item. Dr. Swiney reported that registration will reopen for new transfer students on July 31 and for all continuing students on August 8. Ms. Gray distributed a spreadsheet prepared by Becky Watson that summarizes advertising for freshmen and transfer student recruitment from April 28, 2008 through July 31, 2008. Dr. Street suggested that for winter quarter enrollments we might want to start focusing on specific programs in our advertising as opposed to general CWU advertising. Dr. McIntyre asked if Becky Watson could attend Cabinet on August 13 to present the marketing/advertising pieces that are currently being distributed. Ms. Gray will follow up with Dr. Watson and invite her to the meeting. Dr. Fouts gave an update on online courses. So far, during summer quarter, the online courses have had an average of approximately 21 students in each course. Dr. Swiney added that the Registar could start tracking average class loads per student. The group agreed that this was a good idea. This will be added to the matrix and a report will be available next week. Dr. Swiney and Dr. Nelson gave an update on retention efforts at CWU. The retention committee is discussing an overall retention structure and focus. The group has developed a list of ideas that they hope to initiate soon. The group also reviewed and discussed the fall mini-stats.
2. Planning for BOT retreat
Cabinet members discussed details of the upcoming Board of Trustees Retreat, July 31, 2008 through August 1, 2008. Dr. McIntyre reported that a team of board members will interview cabinet members on the first day of the retreat. Judy Miller will be in touch with folks regarding details.
III. Information Items
1. Copy of newspaper article titled, "Hybridize Research, Economic Development"
Dr. McIntyre distributed this article from the Seattle PI as an information item for cabinet members to review.
IV. Executive Reports
Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:
Dr. Fouts reported for Dr. Quirk. He stated that Academic Affairs folks have a retreat this week. Kevin Nemeth will give a report regarding CWU´s Innovation Park at the retreat.
Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management:
Dr. Swiney reported for Dr. Tullos. Dr. Tullos is currently negotiating the student services contracts with the community colleges where our university centers are located. Linda Kuk, assessment consultant, will be on campus next week to assess SAEM strategic plans. It should be a very informative meeting. Ellensburg transfer student orientations wrap up this week. East side center transfer orientations were last week and west side center transfer orientations are next week.
Vice President for University Relations:
Ms. Gray reported for Dr. Hall. A group will be meeting soon to discuss naming opportunities in Hogue Hall. There is a campaign debriefing meeting on August 28. The Alumni Association is hosting a tour of Washington´s premium wine region on Saturday, August 2. The tour will leave Ellensburg at 10:30 a.m. and return at approximately 7:00 p.m. The CWU Alumni Mariners Night is Thursday, August 21. There will be a BBQ prior to the game. The Annual Rodeo Brunch is August 29 at 10:00 a.m. at the lawn at the president´s house.
Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs:
Mr. Vertrees reported for Mr. Corona. The press release regarding the squirrel story has been distributed and is on the CWU homepage. Mr. Vertrees will need to come back to Cabinet soon to talk about the capital budget.
Chief Planning Officer:
Dr. Street distributed the draft performance agreement for review and discussion. She will be presenting this draft to the Board of Trustees at their retreat tomorrow. CWU´s final draft is due to the state committee soon.
President:
Dr. McIntyre reported that she has been preparing for the Board of Trustees retreat this week. She will be showing the board the PowerPoint presentation that she recently gave to the Higher Education Coordinating Board.
V. Progress Reports
1. Accreditation
Dr. Street reported that Patsy Callaghan, Phil Backlund, Tracy Pellett, and Warren Street will come to Cabinet on August 20 to give an update on university-wide academic assessment.
