President´s Cabinet

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Rich Corona, Libby Street, Roger Fouts, Jen Gray, John Swiney

Guests: Agnes Canedo

I. Action Items

1. Approval of Cabinet Minutes from July 16, 2008
Motion to approve the Cabinet Minutes from July 16, 2008 as presented by Mr. Corona. Seconded by Dr. Street. No further discussion. Motion carried.

II. Discussion Items

1. Enrollment Planning
Dr. Street distributed the activities and outcome matrix related to Fall 08 enrollment. The group reviewed and discussed each action. In addition, Dr. McIntyre distributed the fall mini stats, a list of available courses for fall, and CWU’s graduation rates for review and discussion. Dr. Swiney and Ms. Canedo gave an update on Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) student applications. Dr. Swiney added that CWU has awarded a record number of financial aid packages for the 2008-09 year. He commended Ms. Canedo and Financial Aid staff on a job well done. Dr. Swiney also distributed several reports comparing Fall 2007 to Fall 2008 freshmen and transfer admissions numbers for review and discussion.

2. Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) - CWU representatives
Dr. McIntyre explained that the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) is asking that we verify our current representatives. Cabinet members reviewed the list. Dr. Kirk Johnson will replace Dr. Meghan Miller and Dr. Roger Fouts will be added as one of CWU´s representatives. Ms. Dawson will follow up with AAC&U on CWU´s list of representatives.

III. Executive Reports

Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:
Dr. Fouts reported for Dr. Quirk. He stated that he, Kevin Nemeth, and Jim Armstrong have visited several research foundations recently to get feedback on models and funding issues. This process has been very helpful and informative.

Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs:
Mr. Corona reported that he and Wendy Rittereiser recently participated in a meeting with the local medical community to discuss the issue of recruiting doctors to Ellensburg. The hospital and clinics are working together on the problem. It was a very good meeting. Mr. Corona added that if anyone has questions regarding medical care in Ellensburg, please contact the benefits office in Human Resources.

Vice President for University Relations:
No report.

Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management:
Dr. Swiney reported for Dr. Tullos. Construction on the new residence hall is underway and current housing numbers look really good. Kathy Gaer-Carlton has been appointed as the Interim Director of Admissions while Lisa Garcia-Hanson is at Harvard for her one-year management training. Jim Maraviglia, Assistant Vice President of Admissions, Recruitment, and Financial Aid at Cal Poly, will be on campus at the end of August to assist us with getting our new recruitment system in place. Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and Academic Affairs are working collaboratively on retention issues.

Chief Planning Officer:
Dr. Street reported that a group of folks continue to work on CWU´s performance agreement. This will be a discussion item at the Board of Trustees Retreat next week. Our final report is due to the state committee by August 15. Dr. Street has begun drafting the Washington Quality Awards document. She hopes to have a draft available for the Cabinet retreat in August. Legislators and local tribal leaders were recently invited to a special VIP tour of the Wenas Creek Mammoth Project.

President:
Dr. McIntyre reported that our presentation to the Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB) on Monday went really well. The HECB was very complimentary of our presentation and slides. Dr. McIntyre thanked everyone that assisted with preparation of CWU´s presentation. The selected Spheres of Distinction will be announced as soon as the vice presidents have notified their folks which ones were forwarded to the President. The Board of Trustees Retreat is next week. Jesse Nelson, Director of the David Wain Coon Center for Excellence in Leadership, will facilitate a leadership exercise for the board.

IV. Progress Reports

1. Accreditation
Dr. Street reminded the group that for NWCCU accreditation, every division must have their information (strategic plans, assessment, etc) available on the Web soon.

Dr. Fouts reported that ABET accreditation is moving along.

V. Cabinet reports on community events and meetings attended

Dr. McIntyre: Elwood Manor Reunions (Friday and Saturday), Rotary, Economic Development Group Board Meeting, Jazz in the Valley events

Mr. Corona: Ellensburg Downtown Association, Jazz in the Valley Volunteer

Dr. Street: Going away celebration for Djordje Popovic, Northwest Public Radio event at Wild Horse Wind Farm, Jazz in the Valley Volunteer, Lyle Lovett Concert, CASA Board Meeting
