I. Action Items
1. Approval of Cabinet minutes from January 9, 2008
Motion to approve the Cabinet minutes from January 9, 2008 as presented by Dr. Street. Seconded by Mr. Corona. No further discussion. Motion carried.
II. Discussion Items
1. Economic Impact Study - Dr. McIntyre
Dr. McInytre distributed the CWU short-run and long-run impacts of 2007. ECONorthwest, the consulting firm conducting the CWU Economic Impact Study, prepared these documents. Cabinet members will review the documents and send feedback to Judy Miller as soon as possible.
2. Science Phase II
Dr. Kurtz and Mr. Ryder joined the group to discuss Science Phase II. Dr. Denman began by giving some background on Science Phase I and II. The focus on math and science has increased dramatically in the last few years so it´s very important to go forward with this project. Enrollment issues, the strength of programs and faculty, and facilities are other important factors. Dr. Denman asked that Cabinet members hold off on the decision regarding Science Phase II until a new Provost is appointed. Dr. Kurtz and Mr. Ryder gave some additional background on the project. The priority list will continue to be reviewed and Dr. Kurtz, Mr. Ryder, and Bill Vertrees will be invited to cabinet on February 13 to discuss the issues further.
3. Capital list
Mr. Corona reported that the capital list will not go forward to the Board of Trustees this month.
4. Invitation to the Washington State Productivity Board´s Annual Innovations Awards Ceremony - February 13, 2008
Dr. McIntyre received an invitation to the Washington State Productivity Board´s Annual Innovation Awards. Awards for outstanding achievements in the Employee Suggestion and Teamwork Incentive Programs for 2007 will be presented. Cabinet members are unable to attend the event, so Ms. Dawson will check to see if Ann Anderson can attend as CWU´s representative.
5. Homecoming recommendations
Dr. Street reported that a group convened recently to discuss homecoming issues. The group developed a vision, a mission, and put together a steering committee. Cabinet members agreed that Jim Armstrong and Scott Drummond will co-chair the executive committee. The Homecoming Steering committee will have a representative from the following: Alumni Relations, Campus Activities, Residence Hall Coordinators, the Associated Students of CWU, Athletics, the Office of Development, University Recreation, and Public Relations and Marketing. Some optional representatives include: Campus Life Publicity Center, Dining Services, Scheduling, Campus Police, Facilities Management, and someone from the Ellensburg community. Dr. Street asked Cabinet members to review the list of possible steering committee members and send feedback to her as soon as possible. Homecoming weekend is October 24-25, 2008.
6. Jefferson Awards
Dr. McIntyre received a letter asking for nominations for the Jefferson Awards. These are awards that go to individuals whose volunteer efforts have made a difference in their communities. Dr. McIntyre asked Cabinet members to send possible nominees to her as soon as possible. Nominations are due by February 20. Dr. Street and Dr. Tullos will work on the nomination.
7. Reminder: Policies Manual reorganization - Dr. Street
Dr. Street reminded the group that divisions are supposed to be working on revisions to their sections of the policies manual. The goal is to have the policies manual totally reorganized by the time a new president is on board.
8. Reminder: Speakers Bureau/Resource Director - Dr. Street
It was decided last year that Academic Affairs would take over the Speakers Bureau/Resource Directory and encourage faculty to enter their data into the system. As of this date, no data has been entered into the system. Dr. Denman will follow up with folks in Academic Affairs.
9. BOT agenda at 10:30 a.m. - Judy Miller
Ms. Miller joined the group to discuss Friday´s Board of Trustees agenda. The group reviewed and discussed the morning and afternoon agenda items.
III. Executive Reports
Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:
Dr. Denman reported that she has been working on issues regarding Science Phase II and Board of Trustees agenda items the last couple of weeks.
Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management:
Dr. Tullos reported that the Majors Fair is next month. Post cards have been sent to parents asking them to encourage their students to attend the upcoming Majors Fair. The new Student Affairs and Enrollment Management web site will be launched next week. Dr. Tullos thanked everyone for their overwhelming support for the Hyatt family. It was very appreciated. Yesterday´s Academic Achievement Celebration was very successful.
Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs:
Mr. Corona distributed information regarding the Focus the Nation event. This is a two-day event that will focus on climate change, alternative energy, green building, politics and government, local initiatives, private industry solutions, and student research. A draft Summary Schedule of State and Non-State Fees, developed in response to Initiative 960, was distributed for review and discussion. Kim Loranz will review the document as well and send feedback to Kevin Kimball. Mr. Corona testified in Olympia recently regarding the supplemental budget request. CWU´s testimony was well received. Deconstruction of the high rises will begin in March. We are moving forward on bond preparations for the new residence hall.
Vice President for University Relations:
Jen Gray reported for Dr. Baker. The Foundation Board met last week. The Board instituted a 2% increase in administrative fees to help cover the cost of hiring an accountant for the Foundation. Campaign goal are on target. Ms. Gray reported that she is on the Standard One Accreditation committee and received great feedback from university relations staff yesterday.
Chief Planning Officer:
Dr. Street reported that a group will meet later today to discuss collaboration of recycling on campus. The catalog summit meeting was yesterday. There are several issues that need to be ironed out. Dr. Street encouraged Cabinet members to attend the Focus the Nation event. The Presidential Search Committee was been announced yesterday.
President:
Dr. McIntyre reported that she attended the Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB) Advisory board last week. Dr. Street has been designated as CWU´s contact for HECB staff to contact regarding issues that come up. As a heads up, Dr. Street may be contacting other cabinet members to assist with the responses.
IV. Progress Reports
1. Accreditation
Dr. Street reported that the Ice s´cream and dream session was held last week and it went well. Most departments have done some work on their self-studies. Division self studies are due by Friday, February 1.
2. Enrollment Planning
Dr. Tullos reported that applications for Fall 2008 are up 17% from this time last year. SAEM staff are meeting today to work on issues for spring quarter. A group will also meet next week to discuss high demand enrollments.
V. At 11:30 a.m.: Ann Anderson regarding legislative update
Ann Anderson joined the group by telephone to give an update on legislative issues. Yesterday, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Education released and approved the draft recommendations for the 2008 supplemental operating budget. The recommendations of the subcommittee now go to the full House Appropriations Committee for inclusion in a final House budget proposal.
