President’s Cabinet

Wednesday, May 23, 2007
8:30 a.m. – Barge 314 (President’s Office)

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Dave Soltz, Rich Corona, Charlotte Tullos, Paul Baker, Libby Street

Guests: Rebecca Thornton, Shelly Johnson

I. At 8:30 a.m. (for 15 minutes): Rebecca Thornton "meet & greet" (new regional staff for Senator Patty Murray)

Dr. Street introduced Becky Thornton. Ms. Thornton is the new Central Washington regional representative for Senator Patty Murray. She graduated from CWU with a degree in Public Relations and Marketing. She is currently meeting with individuals and departments on campus to gather information about CWU. Ms. Thornton added that Senator Murray might be in the area in August. If so, she will try to arrange a visit to CWU.

II. At 9:00 a.m.: Shelly Johnson regarding the 2007-08 Budget

Ms. Johnson joined the group to review the 2007-08 budget. The group discussed the operating budget that will be submitted to the Board of Trustees in June. Ms. Johnson will make the suggested revisions to the spreadsheet and add some footnotes. The cabinet meeting on June 27 will focus mainly on budget. Dr. McIntyre reminded the group that budget request letters, along with spheres of distinction, are due to her after the cabinet meeting on June 27. Ms. Johnson added that carry forward amounts will be available the first week of July.

III. Discussion Item

1. AASCU’s Advocacy Efforts Dr. McIntyre explained that she has been asked by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) to provide the names of individuals at CWU who should receive their advocacy alerts and information advisories. The group decided that for federal issues the primary contact will be Dr. Street and that Dr. McIntyre will be copied. For state issues, Ann Anderson will be the primary contact and Dr. McIntyre will be copied. Ms. Dawson will submit this information to AASCU by email.

IV. Executive Reports

Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:
Dr. Soltz reported that post tenure review and tenure and promotion files are complete. He added that he was very impressed with the faculty that were promoted to associate professors. Dr. Tracy Pellett has been hired as the AVP for Undergraduate Studies. He will be on board July 10. Interviews for the Administrative Assistant to the Provost position are complete. A decision will be made soon. Dr. Soltz will attend the HECB meeting tomorrow and the External Diversity Council meeting at CWU-Lynnwood this Friday. The 501 C3 for the Research Foundation has been submitted to Kim Loranz for review.

Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs:
Mr. Corona reported that he will be meeting with Patricia Notter next week to go over CWU’s budget process. He will also be meeting with Ted Barkley later today to finalize the agenda for the joint City Council/Cabinet meeting scheduled on June 1. Mr. Corona and Dr. Soltz will attend the HAAP banquet.

Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management:
Dr. Tullos reported that transfer applications are down statewide. Confirmed transfers for fall 2007 are down 137 from this time last year. Freshmen admissions will close June 1. We are up about 56 confirmed freshmen from this time last year. The university centers will remain open. Summer session enrollment looks really good. Dr. Tullos continues to work with Agnes Canedo on the waiver needs. Interviewing for several positions in SAEM are occurring this week. Disability Awareness Week is this week. Student Appreciation Day is tomorrow, May 24. There will be a fireworks display at dark tomorrow night.

Vice President for University Relations:
Dr. Baker reported that the Washington Business Journal recently published two articles involving CWU folks. One story featured Arnie Prentice, CWU Foundation Board member, and the other story featured Leslie Jones, CWU Trustee. The office of alumni relations is hosting an event for graduating seniors, "Farewell for Now," on May 30. Please send feedback regarding the Athletic Hall of Fame banquet to Dr. Baker as soon as possible. A debriefing meeting will be held soon.

Chief Planning Officer:
Dr. Street reminded Dr. Soltz and Dr. Tullos to submit their university bulletin story on enrollment to Rob Lowery by Thursday. Fiscal year 08 budget sheets are up and running. Dr. Street added that it would be nice to have position control added to FMS. Mr. Corona will follow up on this.

President:
Dr. McIntyre distributed several mail pieces for cabinet members to follow up on. The group agreed that they would each contribute $300 to the HAAP banquet. Lisa Garcia-Hanson will generate the paperwork and distribute it to divisions for signatures. Dr. McIntyre has been appointed to the Governor’s P20 Council. Also, as of July 1, Dr. McIntyre will become chair of the COP

Administrative Operations Coordinator:
Ms. Dawson reported that a signing ceremony between CWU and Everett Community College has been scheduled for July 16. Dr. McIntyre will attend. She also reminded the group to submit their summer vacation schedules so a vacation calendar can be finalized.

V. Progress Reports

1. Summer Retreat
A summer retreat will be arranged, once vacation schedules have been finalized and submitted to Ms. Dawson.

2. Emergency Preparedness Debriefing meeting
Ms. Dawson will schedule an emergency preparedness debriefing meeting. Following that, cabinet members will have another emergency preparedness tabletop exercise.

3. Student Fees
Dr. Tullos and Dr. Soltz distributed lists of mandatory fees. These lists include course fees and other student fees including: Health & Counseling Center fee, Athletic fee, Technology fee, Central Transit, Recreation Center fee, and Student Union fee. This information will be combined into one document and the group will review it again on May 30.
