President's Cabinet

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Rich Corona, Charlotte Tullos, Paul Baker, Wayne Quirk

Absent: Libby Street (vacation)

I. Action Items

1. Approval of Cabinet Minutes from 6/21/06 Motion to approve the Cabinet Minutes from 6/21/06 as presented by Dr. Baker. Seconded by Mr. Corona. No further discussion. Motion carried.

II. Discussion Items

1. Budget question from Shelly Johnson

Cabinet discussed several issues related to the budget.

2. COP planning issues

Dr. McIntyre reported that there is a COP meeting on Friday, June 30. The group will be preparing for the upcoming legislative session. They will also be meeting with Governor Gregoire later that afternoon.

3. Details regarding July 12, 2006 (Governor Gregoire & AG Rob McKenna)

Dr. Soltz will be our representative at the wind farm meeting sponsored by Puget Sound Energy on July 12. Dr. Baker will also attend the wind farm meeting. That same evening, Washington State Attorney General, Rob McKenna, will be on campus to address the public on county, state, and national efforts to combat underage drinking. Dr. Quirk will be our representative at that event.

III. Information Items

1. 23rd Annual Seattle University Gala

The 23rd Annual Seattle University Gala is Saturday, November 18, 2006. Official invitations will be mailed later. This is just a notification to save the date if you plan to attend.

2. June 2006 Community Letter from the College Board

Dr. McIntyre distributed this item as information for Cabinet members to review at their leisure.

IV. Executive Reports

Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:

Dr. Quirk reported for Dr. Soltz. Summer session headcount is up here on campus. They are discovering that students are here this summer, but are not taking full loads. Continuing Education will be using this year to identify courses that are necessary for students to take in the summer and will adjust the course offerings for next summer. Dr. Quirk added that Agnes Canedo, Director of Financial Aid, was able to identify several students who still had financial aid available for the summer so that also boosted summer enrollment numbers a bit. A White Paper on the role of Graduate Studies is currently being drafted and should be done sometime in July.

Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management:

Dr. Tullos reported that enrollment numbers continue to look good. Approximately 1300 new freshmen housing contracts have been received for this fall. Freshmen admissions will close July 1. The Waiver Committee meets today. All of the waiver money for next year has been distributed. The Washington Achievers are on campus this week. Approximately 600 students are attending this event. Dr. Tullos presided over the Senior Student Affairs Officers' meeting at Seattle University last week. Vice Presidents from all over the west attended this meeting. Dr. Tullos thanked Don Diebert and staff for the countless hours they have spent dealing with FMS upgrade issues.

Vice President for University Relations:

Dr. Baker reported that Alumni Affairs is hosting a Seattle Mariners event on August 24-25, 2006. Julie Cloninger is working on a possible donor gathering in conjunction with this event. Jim Armstrong is also researching the possibility of a "Cruise on the Sound" as an alumni event to occur sometime in late September or early October. The Annual Rodeo Bowl Brunch is Friday, September 1, 2006 at the President's Reception Center. The football game follows at noon. CWU will host North Dakota. The Development Priorities Committee meets this Friday, June 30.

Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs:

Mr. Corona reported that the conference season is going very well. Approximately 1900 football players were on campus last week. EIS continues to iron out the bugs with the FMS upgrade. Mr. Corona also thanked staff for their tireless efforts working on these issues.

President:

Dr. McIntyre distributed Western Washington University's Board of Trustees' meeting minutes for review. The cabinet photo has been selected and prints are currently being made. It was suggested to Dr. McIntyre that a clock of some type be installed in the eating area of the new Student Union building. Dr. Tullos will follow up on this request. Dr. McIntyre also asked Mr. Corona to follow up on issues regarding the designated smoking area outside of the Tower Theatre. Dr. McIntyre is currently reviewing budget letters and will discuss them with the vice presidents at their one-on-one meetings this week. Decisions will be made next week.
