President's Cabinet

Wednesday, July 26, 2006
8:30 a.m. - President's Office

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Dave Soltz, Rich Corona, Charlotte Tullos, Paul Baker, Libby Street

I. Discussion Items

Campus Map - Dr. Street
Dr. Street explained that she received an email from Charlie Pringle, Engineering Assistant at FMD, asking if there was anything in writing stating that FMD is responsible for the campus map. Mr. Corona and Dr. Street will draft a letter to Bill Vertrees designating FMD as the sole keeper of the official campus map.

Fair trade coffee & related issues - Dr. Street
Dr. Street gave some background on this issue. Dr. McIntyre added that this is a complex issue. It was agreed that the university will not take a stand on this issue, but individual students can endorse it as their project. Dr. Street will draft a general policy to cover these types of issues for the future.

Senior Services - Dr. Street
Dr. Street has been meeting with Kevin Nemeth and Ken Baxter regarding Senior Services. Mr. Baxter is working on the possibility of holding an Elderhostel program here on campus next summer. He and Mr. Nemeth are pursuing the possibility of offering certification in some of the program areas. Mr. Nemeth recently performed a survey regarding senior housing. Dr. Street suggested having Mr. Nemeth report the results to Cabinet. Ms. Dawson will schedule the presentation for an upcoming Cabinet meeting.

Cabinet Retreat details
Cabinet retreat details were reviewed and discussed.

Integrated planning
Cabinet members will give an update on integrated planning efforts for the university at the Board of Trustees retreat on August 3.

Board of Trustees retreat planning
Ms. Miller joined the group to discuss the upcoming Board of Trustees retreat. Cabinet members will attend the retreat on Thursday, August 3 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Ms. Miller explained that the retreat had to be moved due to an overbooking emergency that occurred at Cave B. Cave B has arranged for us to be moved to the Salish Lodge in Snoqualmie and will cover the difference in the costs that accompany the change in location. Details of the retreat were reviewed and discussed.

Budget issues
Dr. McIntyre asked if Cabinet members had any questions regarding their budget letters. She explained that looking forward to next year, there are several items that need to be considered for internal allocations. She added that the Spheres of Distinction proposals were very impressive.


II. Information Item

1. Cabinet Summer Schedule Matrix
Ms. Dawson prepared a matrix of cabinet members' vacation schedules for the summer as an information item. Please let her know if your schedule has changed.

III. Executive Reports

Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:
Dr. Soltz reported that Academic Affairs had a retreat yesterday. The group spent most of the day working on a strategic action plan. They also did some planning for Fall Faculty Day, which is scheduled for September 18. Dr. Soltz will attend the Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB) meeting tomorrow at Grays Harbor Community College.

Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs:
RFP's for the Economic Impact Study are currently being reviewed. A decision will be made soon. Mr. Corona will be discussing the briefing sheets for the capital budget requests with Linda Schactler later today and will start meeting with folks in Olympia soon. The consultant for the South Neighborhood Study is currently on campus gathering information. Mr. Corona has been asked to investigate the issues/possibilities of offering parking spaces on campus for electric vehicles. He will report back on that later. Mr. Corona recently attended the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) conference. It was a very worthwhile conference.

Vice President for University Relations:
Dr. Baker reported that he and Julie Cloninger recently attended the CASE national conference. The conference was primarily about integration and collaboration. The Foundation Board meets August 11-12. Alumni is putting together a cruise, "Sail the Sound," on Lake Washington on September 15. Ron Sims will host the event. The Rodeo Bowl Brunch is coming together. Central Connections is currently at the printer. The newsletter for friends of the CWU Foundation, Rapport, was distributed. Please send Dr. Baker feedback on the media training session that was held yesterday.

Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management:
Dr. Tullos reported that enrollment numbers look good. Freshmen admissions closed July 1. Registration opens up again on August 14. Transfer student orientations are coming up next week. The Enrollment Summit is August 1. The SAEM Consultant, Linda Kuk, will be on campus August 9-10. She will be looking at every department and program in SAEM. The position description for the AVP for Enrollment Management has been posted. Dr. Tullos thanked everyone for helping with the Discover Orientations. She received many compliments on this year's program. She added that during Wildcat Welcome Weekend an additional orientation session will be held for students/parents who were unable to attend any of the summer dates. Richard DeShields has been appointed as the Interim Director of University Housing and New Student Programs.

Executive Assistant for Policy and Planning:
Mike Rogers, the President's Office Web Assistant, has the resource directory just about ready to launch on the Web. Dr. Street reminded the group that Doc Hastings will be on campus August 21 to make an announcement. The Washington Learns Higher Education Advisory Committee members have been asked to submit a one-page response to the consultant's report by Friday, July 28, 2006. Dr. Street will share her response with Cabinet members prior to submitting.

Administrative Operations Coordinator:
Ms. Dawson asked if Donna Kramer should plan to attend the Cabinet Retreat in August to do her presentation on Non-Violent Communication. The group agreed to have the presentation on Friday, August 25 at 1:30 p.m.

President:
Dr. McIntyre distributed several mail items for Cabinet members to follow up on. She also reminded the group to provide feedback regarding the homepage to Becky Watson.
