President's Cabinet

Wednesday, February 8, 2006
8:30 a.m. - President's Office

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Dave Soltz, Charlotte Tullos, Paul Baker, Libby Street, Kevin Kimball

Guests: Bill Vertrees, Shelly Johnson

I. At 8:30 a.m.: Bill Vertrees & Shelly Johnson regarding Capital Budget
The combined capital list was distributed and discussed. Cabinet members offered feedback and suggestions. Ms. Johnson and Mr. Vertrees are attending a meeting in Olympia tomorrow and will submit our list.

II. Discussion Items

1. Leadership Ellensburg "Education Day" – April 21
Dr. Street explained that the Leadership Ellensburg "Education Day" has been changed to April 21. Jim Armstrong suggested the following agenda items: a tour of the new Student Union/Rec Center and Sue Lombard, a report on Economic Impact, and a discussion of the university’s academic programs. The format of the meeting will be as follows:

12:00-1:00 – lunch (Sue Lombard)
1:00-2:00 – tours
2:00-4:00 – the university’s academic programs
4:00-4:30 – wrap up session

2. South Neighborhood Study – Dr. Street
Dr. Street distributed a summary of the South Neighborhood Study that was prepared by Doug Ryder. Please review your section of the document and make sure that Mr. Ryder has captured all of your division’s needs.

3. Investiture for Teresa Kulik
The Investiture for Teresa Kulik as Judge of the Court of Appeals, Division III, will be held in Wenatchee on February 15, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. A delegation from CWU will attend the event.

4. Preston Gates Meeting – February 10
Dr. Street explained that Tim Peckinpaugh and Chad See from Preston Gates will be on campus February 10 to discuss our federal legislative agenda. The proposed itinerary for their visit was distributed and discussed.

5. City Council Meeting Update
Dr. McIntyre explained that the Ellensburg City Council has recommended Friday, March 10 as a possible date for a joint meeting with CWU Cabinet members. The group confirmed that March 10 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. worked for their schedules. Suggested agenda items for this meeting include: transit needs in the community, shared interest in the Visitors and Convention Bureau, and keeping up with advances in technology, particularly digital TV and high speed wireless networks. Ms. Dawson will reserve a room for the meeting and confirm the date and time with Ted Barkley’s office.

6. WICHE Policy Insights
Dr. McIntyre distributed WICHE Policy Insights for Cabinet members to review.

III. Executive Reports

Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:
Dr. Soltz reported that the Budget Advisory Committee meets today at 11:00 a.m. to review and approve the summer session budget. He will preside over the meeting in Mr. Corona’s absence. Dr. Soltz recently attended the AASCU Winter Provosts meeting in Charleston. The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and faculty demographics were a major focus of the meeting.

Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management:
Dr. Tullos reported that the CAMP grant will be submitted next month. Teresa Farnum, Retention Consultant, will be here tomorrow and Friday. Mike Reilly and Lisa Garcia-Hanson are presenting at the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) conference in April. The student disciplinary policy with regard to off campus student behavior has been revised and will come to PAC soon.

Vice President for University Relations:
Dr. Baker reported that Julie Cloninger has arranged for Dave Gibson, retiring Executive Director of the MSU Foundation, to be on campus some time in April to do a training session on prospect management and campaign management with the deans and development team. The President's Report will be here Friday, February 10 and the Spring 2006 Central Connections is underway. Dr. Baker is working with Tracy Terrell on a possible music venue for the West Side Commencement. He will report back on their progress later.

Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs:
Mr. Kimball reported for Mr. Corona. Several departments in Business and Financial Affairs are preparing for the upcoming bargaining unit 1 negotiations. Mr. Kimball is working with Becky Watson to develop a communication plan for the FMS upgrade in April. A draft of the shared operations policy for the Student Union & Recreation Center was distributed and discussed. A summary of this document will be drafted and submitted to Cabinet soon.

Executive Assistant for Policy & Planning:
Dr. Street asked if Cabinet members could receive Linda Schactler's weekly legislative update. Dr. McIntyre will follow up with Ms. Schactler and ask her to start sending the summary to the entire Cabinet. The winter quarter Cabinet Retreat has been scheduled for March 6 at the President's Reception Center. The meeting will focus primarily on planning. The Strategic Planning forums have all been scheduled and postcards with all of the dates and details will be distributed campus-wide on Monday. Please encourage folks in your divisions to attend these forums. Dr. Street has met with all divisions, with the exception of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management, regarding the Speaker’s Bureau. She will be meeting with that group next week.

President:
Dr. McIntyre attended the Rotary Board meeting this morning. The annual Rotary Auction is coming up in April. Dr. McIntyre suggested that the university donate something for the auction. If you have ideas, let the President's Office know as soon as possible. Dr. McIntyre asked Dr. Baker to arrange to have Becky Watson do a presentation to President's Advisory Council regarding external and internal public relations. Dr. Baker will work with Ms. Dawson to arrange a date and time.
