President's Cabinet

Wednesday, August 16, 2006
8:30 a.m. - President's Office

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Rich Corona, Charlotte Tullos, Paul Baker, Wayne Quirk

I. Discussion Items

1. Retreat agenda:
The cabinet retreat agenda was reviewed and discussed. Dr. McIntyre explained that Donna Kramer will be doing her training session on Non Violent Communication the second day of the retreat. She added that given the number of people on campus who have completed the training, it would be good for cabinet to be “on board.”

The remainder of the retreat will focus on planning, brainstorming, and problem solving.

II Executive Reports

Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs:
Mr. Corona reported that he, Shelly Johnson, Ann Anderson, and Bill Vertrees will be meeting with HECB, OFM, and Legislative staff in Olympia on August 28 to discuss CWU’s capital projects. Mr. Corona and Dr. Tullos attended a meeting yesterday to kick off the latest HR project (Oracle platform). The estimated completion for this project is October 2007. There will be another FMS upgrade coming online this month. Beginning fall quarter, Dining Services will accept credit/debit cards at the various dining stations on campus. FMD anticipates Nicholson Pavilion construction to be completed by September 15, 2006. The cooler situation in the computer center is under control. The John Wayne Trail will come through campus at Alder Street, by the apartments at 18th and Alder. CWU, the city of Ellensburg, and the state are working together on a plan for the pedestrian trail and the automobile through roads.

Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:
Dr. Quirk reported for Dr. Soltz. Doc Hastings will be on campus August 21, 2006 to announce funds to be provided to the World Wine Program. Summer Session enrollment is up by 53 FTE. Continuing Education is looking at classes to see exactly what areas/programs are up. A proposal to modify some of the course offerings for next year will be coming forward fall quarter. They are also working with Traci Terrell and Scott Carlton to discuss necessary classes to offer summer session in order for students to complete 5th-year plans. Dr. Quirk is chairing the search committee for the Director of Alumni Relations position. Cascade Land Conservancy, Kittitas County Commissioners, and CWU are working on details of leasing Gladmar Park from the County. CWU is drafting a proposal with the Cascade Land Conservancy. They will add final touches to the document at their meeting tonight, and then the County Commissioners will review the proposal in the near future.

Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management:
Dr. Tullos reported that the Step Grant (NSF program) is going forward. The program has been funded internally for a year and now is moving forward and applying for grant money. Structural support for the program is provided by the Spheres of Distinction funding, but the students will receive support from the grant. The new Recreation Center is now accepting memberships from emeritus faculty and staff. Dr. Tullos also thanked Jim Armstrong for the things he’s been doing as Interim Director of Alumni Relations. He is doing a great job keeping up CWU traditions and focusing attention on the Alumni Association.

Vice President for University Relations:
Dr. Baker distributed samples of the CWU Alumni license plate designs. The group selected a new design that will be available soon. Information regarding the receptions for this year’s Performing Arts and Presidential Speaker Series was distributed for review and discussion. The Alumni Board retreat was August 5 and the Foundation Board retreat was August 11-12. Both retreats went well and were very positive gatherings.

Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs:
Mr. Corona proposed that the university purchase some portable bleachers and split the cost evenly across divisions. The bleachers will be used for a number of events on campus. The cost of renting the bleachers is very high. If we bought them, they would pay themselves off in three years. Dr. McIntyre agreed that this was a good thing to do.

President:
Dr. McIntyre asked Dr. Tullos to have Leslie Webb work with the Provost and Nancy Howard to draft a response to the HECB Draft Report -- Diversity in Washington Higher Education. A response is due September 21, 2006. Dr. McIntyre received a request about reporting Running Start students. Dr. Tullos will follow up on this request. The theme for the next President’s Report will be “Drawing on our Distinctions.” The report will have a larger, overall message regarding our Spheres of Distinction. Dr. McIntyre asked Cabinet members to send feedback regarding this approach to her as soon as possible. Rotary will have their district conference on campus in April of 2008. This conference will bring approximately 400-500 people to our campus. Dr. McIntyre suggested Cabinet members discuss economic development planning at an upcoming Cabinet meeting. She added that several groups are working towards the same goal, but are not working together. Mr. Corona recommended getting a large white board, listing all of the local organizations and what each group does, and noting CWU representatives already working with some of these groups. Ms. Dawson will see that this issue is added to an upcoming Cabinet agenda.

III. New Business

Dr. McIntyre asked for a presentation to Cabinet in the future regarding the original funding plan for PeopleSoft. Some of the questions that need to be answered are: What happened to the plan? Why is it an ongoing financial burden? How much money are we looking at? Mr. Corona will work with Ms. Dawson to get a presentation scheduled for Cabinet soon.

IV. Old Business

No old business.
