President's Cabinet

Wednesday, September 21, 2005
8:30 a.m. - President's Office

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Dave Soltz, Paul Baker, Charlotte Tullos, Rich Corona, Libby Street

Guests: Carmen Rahm, Bruce Porter, Shelly Johnson, Ann Anderson

I. At 8:30: Bruce Porter, Carmen Rahm & Ann Anderson re: SmartBuying Program Update

Mr. Porter began by giving some background information on the Operating budget bill 6090/Strategic Purchasing Strategy. The Washington SmartBuying Partnership is Governor Gregoire's initiative to help save $50 million during the 2005-07 biennium by reforming state government's purchasing practices. The approach is to have all of the purchasing power combined into one area under General Administration. Mr. Porter, Mr. Rahm, and Ms. Johnson are working with their counterparts at the other state institutions to stay apprised of these issues. Cabinet will be updated periodically.

II. At 9:00: Ann Anderson & Shelly Johnson re: Supplemental Budget

Ms. Johnson reminded the group of the four areas that the Cabinet decided to pursue in the supplemental budget request. They include: tuition waiver authority, the 1.6% salary increase for all categories of employees, utilities, and disability support services.

III. Discussion Items

1. University Standing Committees (terms of appointment) - Dr. Street
Dr. Street explained that university standing committee issues will be an item that is discussed regularly at Cabinet for the next couple of months. Chris Frankenfield, in the President's Office, will be working with the administrative assistants in each of the divisions to reorganize the committee lists and to make sure that appointed members have an identified term.

2. Board of Trustees agenda - "celebrations"
Dr. McIntyre stated that during her President's report at the Board of Trustees meeting on October 7, she would like to celebrate some of the grant recipients. Dr. Soltz will have Dr. Quirk submit three or four names and background information to Judy Miller this week.

3. Cabinet Retreat (Oct 12)
Dr. Street and Dr. Soltz will be out of town October 12, so the group agreed to move the Fall Cabinet Retreat to October 26. Ms. Dawson will work on securing the meeting space and get back to the administrative assistants soon.

IV. Executive Reports

Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:
Dr. Soltz reported that Fall Faculty Day was very successful. Approximately 240 faculty turned out for the event. The breakout groups worked well. Dr. Soltz added that the lunch and setting at the newly remodeled Lombard Room was wonderful. Academic Affairs staff attended a symposium recently that focused on deaf awareness. Additional sections of general education courses are being opened to accommodate students.

Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs:
Mr. Corona reported that Sue Lombard opened last weekend. There are still a few minor details to tend to, but overall it's open and looks great. Mr. Corona will be meeting with the ASCWU BOD officers today to discuss issues regarding dining and housing. Mr. Corona suggested "sustainability of our environment" as a topic for a future Presidential Speaker Lecture Series.

Vice President for University Relations:
Dr. Baker began by thanking Dr. Street for her assistance with their strategic planning session yesterday. It went very well. For the Battle in Seattle, Cabinet members will be provided with club level tickets so they can move between the various suites. The Foundation Board meeting is October 21. Two new members will be inducted that day. They are Claude Stritmatter & Christine Day. The final candidate for the Director of Public Relations & Marketing position will be here this Friday. The Ellensburg Chamber Installation dinner is October 1. Please let Dr. Baker know if you plan to attend and he will RSVP for the group.

Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management:
Dr. Tullos also thanked Dr. Street for her assistance with SAEM's strategic planning process. Wildcat Welcome Weekend was very successful. A number of events/activities were planned for the students. Dr. Tullos and Mr. Corona volunteered at the "Bite of the Burg" yesterday. Attendance seemed good, but it was hard to judge due to the venues being so widespread this year. Enrollment numbers look good.

Executive Assistant to the President for Policy & Planning:
Dr. Street reported that on October 13 the Kittitas County Emergency Management Council and Kittitas County Public Health Department are holding Disaster Preparation forum at the CWU Health and Counseling Center. It was suggested that each division send a representative to this meeting. Please let Dr. Street know who your representative will be so she can RSVP for the group. The Native American Indian Advisory Council meeting is October 6. Dr. Street met with the executive interns yesterday and it was determined that their class meeting time will be Thursdays at 11:00.

President:
Dr. McIntyre reported that she recently met with Brian Christiansen, who is the new Deputy State Director for Senator Murray. At the Rotary board meeting this morning, some issues were raised regarding the basketball game that Rotary is planning to sponsor in November. Dr. Baker will follow up with Mark Anderson on these issues.
