8:30 a.m. - President's Office
Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Dave Soltz, Rich Corona, Paul Baker, Libby Street, Stacy Klippenstein
Guest: Mark Lundgren
I. At 8:30 a.m. (for 15 minutes) - Mark Lundgren re: The National Survey on Student Engagement
Mr. Lundgren gave a brief summary of the National Survey on Student Engagement. He explained that freshmen and seniors are targeted for this survey. To focus discussions about the importance of student engagement and guide institutional improvement efforts, NSSE created five clusters or benchmarks of effective educational practice. They include: level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences, and supportive campus environment. Mr. Lundgren added that in comparison to the 2001 survey we have a more average response rate. All in all, CWU is right on target or slightly ahead of the other schools in most of the indicators.
II. Discussion Items
1. Review internal & external lists for Synthesizing Committee Survey - Dr. Street
Dr. Street explained that information will soon be mailed to internal and external constituents regarding "what's next" in strategic planning at CWU. Please review the list and let Dr. Street know if you think of any other constituencies that should be added to the mailing list.
2. Invitation to nominate individuals for the Annual AAHHE (American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education) Awards
Send suggested nominations to Dr. Street as soon as possible.
3. Review of planning goals and accomplishments
Dr. McIntyre explained that planning will continue to be a discussion item on the Cabinet agenda. Following up on the Cabinet Retreat discussion, Dr. McIntyre announced that she will review the assignments and then distribute them to Cabinet members soon. Mr. Corona suggested that we design a strategy to distribute our list of accomplishments externally. The list is very impressive and should be shared.
4. 2-1-1 information survey
Dr. McIntyre explained that she received information from People for People regarding the Washington Information Network (WIN) 2-1-1. WIN 2-1-1 is the three-digit number assigned by the Federal Communications Commission for the purpose of providing quick and easy access to information about local health and human services. Mr. Corona will follow up with Human Resources on this information request.
III. Executive Reports
Provost/Senior VP for Academic Affairs:
Dr. Soltz gave a brief update on faculty collective bargaining. The online discussion forum or "blog" that was created for faculty comment on the Academic Affairs Draft Strategic Plan will close November 13. The Provost received a request to change the structure of the University Technology Advisory Committee so that item will be on the PAC agenda next week as a discussion item. There was a faculty forum on the Tortilla Curtain last Thursday. It was well attended.
Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs:
Mr. Corona reported that the University Bookstore will host a faculty and staff appreciation day. Invitations will be mailed soon. Feedback for the AVP for Human Resources candidate is due this week. Mr. Corona reminded the group that the inclement weather letter needs to be distributed soon. His division will review last year's letter and update information. This will be shared with Cabinet next week. Mr. Corona was in Olympia with Ann Anderson and Bill Vertrees yesterday for several legislative meetings.
VP for University Relations:
Dr. Baker reported that planning for "Showdown in the Sound" is moving along. This is the basketball game between Central Washington University and Western Washington University at Key Arena on December 17. Tip off for the women's game will be at 5:00 p.m. and the men's game will begin at 7:00 p.m. Becky Watson has completed her first week as the Director of Public Relations & Marketing. She has had several "getting to know you" visits with individuals around campus. She is also working on a communications plan and a new marketing plan. Dr. Baker attended the Diversity Council meeting on Monday. It went well and was a very positive meeting.
Vice President for University Relations:
Dr. Baker reported that he received a ruling from Teresa Kulik, Senior Assistant Attorney General, regarding whether or not employees can use vacation leave to volunteer for hurricane relief efforts. Ms. Kulik stated that employees can use vacation leave for whatever purpose they want. Supervisors still have to approve the leave, but CWU cannot control what employees do on their time off. Dr. Baker announced that Becky Watson has been hired as the Director of Public Relations and Marketing. She begins November 1. Dr. Baker added that he is busy preparing for the Board of Trustees meeting next week and the Foundation Board meeting on October 21.
VP for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management:
Stacy Klippenstein reported for Dr. Tullos. Dr. Tullos and Keith Champagne are at the University of Arizona this week for the NASPA Conference. There will be two New Student Orientations for students coming in winter quarter. They will be held on December 1 and December 8. The total number of new students coming in winter quarter is 281. Of that number, 35-40 of the new students will be freshmen. We are firm with the opening of the Recreation Center on January 3. Jeff Rosenberry, ASCWU BOD, will be in contact with Becky Watson to invite her to join the committee handling the opening on January 3. Mr. Klippenstein added that Dr. Tullos wanted to mention that Jan Roan, Purchasing Office, has been absolutely wonderful to work with on all of the Student Union & Recreation Center furniture purchases.
Executive Assistant for Policy and Planning:
Dr. Street reported that the Synthesizing Committee is moving forward. The online survey will be live soon. The minutes from the African American Leadership meeting were emailed to Cabinet. Please send Dr. Street any necessary changes as soon as possible. The Online Ticketing group has been meeting and discussing issues. They are now working with Bruce Porter on possible vendors. There have been two resignations on the External Diversity Council. If you have suggested nominees, please send them to Dr. Street. We could have a report from Chuck McIntyre by December 1. Dr. Street is on the search committee for the Executive Director of the Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce. They are conducting interviews today.
