President's Cabinet

Wednesday, January 12, 2005
8:30 a.m. - President's Office

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Rich Corona, Paul Baker, Charlotte Tullos, Dave Soltz, Libby Street

Guest: Carmen Rahm

I. At 8:30 (for 15 minutes): Carmen Rahm re: remote email solutions (aka Blackberry, etc.)

1. Mr. Rahm reported on the project schedule for the Blackberry launching:

  • Feb 15: order and receive hardware server (Blackberry Enterprise Server BES 4.0) and 6 Blackberry devices
  • March 4: Configure system and interface to CWU GroupWise
  • March 4-18: Pilot Testing March 21-25: (spring break) Rollout to "the 20" users
  • April-June: Break-in period.

Several considerations and comparisons were reviewed. The group agreed that ATT-Cingular is the company to go with.

Carmen also reported that due to data and system problems, student refund distribution is being delayed from 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 12 to 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 13. Announcements will be played on the radio, notices will be added to the Intranet, a message will be sent to the Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce, the Daily Record will be notified to add an article on the Wildcat page today, and an email will be mailed to CWU faculty and staff.

2. At 10:45: Ann Anderson (by phone) re: legislative update
Ms. Anderson reported on the legislative schedule for the week. The new Senate Early Learning, K-12 and Higher Education Committee met for the first time today. Donnie Krisof-Nelson, Edmonds Accounting faculty member and CWU-Lynnwood graduate, testified about the unique opportunity afforded students through the 2+2 program at Lynnwood. It was very compelling testimony. This opened the door for Ms. Anderson to be able to highlight our university centers with new legislators. Friday is the House session on enrollment, tuition, and financial aid. There will also be a work session on performance contracts. Dave Soltz is attending this session as our representative.

II. Discussion Items

1. Clarification on policies manual approvals - Dr. Street
Dr. Street explained that the President's Office received a question regarding which sections of the policies manual need to be approved by Cabinet and President's Advisory Council. It was clarified that items having university wide implications, come to Cabinet first and then President's Advisory Council for final approval.

2. Washington, DC trip details/logistics - Dr. Street
Dr. McIntyre will be attending an AASCU meeting of the Council of State Representatives in Washington, DC in April. Along with this meeting, she will be involved in several alumni and donor events, as well as, having meetings with federal legislators. The Cabinet was asked to send suggested issues for Dr. McIntyre to discuss with these federal legislators to Dr. Street as soon as possible. The details and logistics of the Washington, DC visit will be discussed further at the Cabinet retreat in February.

3. Tsunami Relief Fund - Dr. Street
Dr. Street reported that the press release was distributed regarding CWU's Tsunami Relief Fund. An announcement has also been added to the Intranet. If anyone is available to assist the students with collecting donations on January 20, please contact Lucas Westcoat in the ASCWU BOD office.

4. Draft Institutional Accountability Measures (HECB) - Dave Soltz
Dr. Soltz distributed the draft CWU Institutional Accountability Measures. The cabinet made some suggestions. Dr. Soltz will make the revisions prior to the upcoming HECB meeting where this document will be reviewed and discussed.

III. Executive Reports

Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:
Dr. Soltz reported that the summer session pro-ration policy has been completed and submitted to the Faculty Senate. The budget advisory committee will meet this Thursday, January 13 to consider the Summer Session 2005 budget proposal. Dr. Soltz added that he attended the Ellensburg High School Grand Opening and that it went very well.

Vice President for Business and andinancial Affairs:
There is a new mileage reimbursement rate. As of 1/1/05 it is $0.405 per mile. Facilities is currently working on signage to remind the university community of tobacco use on campus. Mr. Corona added that there have been several staff changes at OFM. He requested that Ann Anderson send an update of all the staff changes to the Cabinet members as soon as possible.

Vice President for University Relations:
Dr. Baker reported that his area is currently working on finalizing a speaker for the West Side Commencement. The draft agenda for Legislative Day, February 15, was distributed. The Spirit of the West Cowboy Gathering will be February 11-13, 2005. The campaign focus groups begin next week. These groups will meet in Ellensburg, Yakima, and Seattle.

Vice President for Student Affairs and andnrollment Management:
Dr. Tullos reported that the numbers for this quarter are very good and the numbers for new freshmen, Fall 2005, are up. Parents weekend will be February 25-27. The new Parents Council will have their first meeting during this time.

Executive Assistant for Policy and Planning:
Dr. Street distributed the revised performance contract document. Please review and get back to her with suggestions.

President:
Dr. McIntyre reported that she attended the NCAA Convention in Dallas, TX, January 7-10. The winter quarter cabinet retreat is scheduled for Wednesday, February 23. If you have agenda items, please send them to Dr. Street.

IV. Information Items

1. PSRW Extra Mile Award Nomination Form/Details
This year's Public Service Recognition week is May 2-6, 2005. In conjunction with this recognition week is the selection of the Extra Mile Award. Nominations are due by 5:00 p.m. on February 25. The nomination forms may be downloaded at www.secstate.wa.gov/productivityboard/. Please send nomination forms to Human Resources.
