President's Cabinet

Wednesday, December 14, 2005
8:30 a.m. - Barge 304

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Dave Soltz, Rich Corona, Charlotte Tullos, Paul Baker, Libby Street

Guests: Shelly Johnson, Bill Vertrees

I. At 8:30 a.m. – Rich Corona, Bill Vertrees, Shelly Johnson re: Capital Projects List
Mr. Corona began by explaining that he, Shelly Johnson, and Bill Vertrees have been meeting to discuss the 10-year Capital Plan. The priority list was distributed and discussed. The list will be reworked a bit and brought back to Cabinet in January.

II. Discussion Items

1. Travel reimbursement for appointed committee members attending meetings on campus or at the university centers
Mr. Corona will see how this is handled for classified staff employees and report back to the group at a later date. Dr. Soltz suggested that committees involving university center employees be arranged with a DE connection whenever possible. It was decided that the division a committee member reports to will pay the travel.

2. Samuelson Union Building Update - Mr. Vertrees
Mr. Vertrees described several possible scenarios for the Samuelson Union Building. He, Doug Ryder, and Keith Champagne will be meeting to discuss these options and a proposal will come forward soon.

3. Continuation of Emergency Planning
Dr. McIntyre reported that the emergency preparedness exercise last Friday went well. However, it was apparent that in any type of emergency situation things will not go smoothly, so we need to be as prepared and flexible as possible. Emergency preparedness training and planning will continue to be discussed regularly throughout the year. Dr. McIntyre distributed an article from Trusteeship (an AGB Publication) titled, "Unpredictable is not an Option." The article contains some very useful and helpful information in regards to disaster or emergency operations planning.

4. Interpreter legislation - Dr. Street
Dr. Street stated that Senator Fraser is sponsoring a bill (SB 6098) regarding educational interpreters and services for the deaf and hard of hearing. It was suggested that Bob Campbell, Director of Disability Support Services, review the bill and discuss any issues that he may have with Ann Anderson.

III. Executive Reports

Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:
Dr. Soltz reported that he will be attending the Higher Education Coordinating Board (HECB) meeting tomorrow. CWU's BAS in Food Service Management is on the consent agenda. For the next few weeks, Dr. Soltz will be reviewing faculty reappointment files. The draft CWU University Intellectual Properties Policy was distributed and discussed. This document will be emailed to PAC members this week so they can be prepared to vote on it at the next PAC meeting, January 4, 2005.

Vice President for University Relations:
Dr. Baker gave an update on possible commencement speakers.

Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs:
Mr. Corona reported that he signed the purchase and sale agreement for the Old Hospital this morning. An announcement will be distributed to the university community regarding the "no smoking" policy soon. Mr. Corona added that the new Spanish web pages received 1100 hits in the first four weeks and the on line web cams received 4500 hits in the first four weeks.

Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management:
Dr. Tullos reported that numbers for winter quarter look good. Gail Farmer, Director of the Wildcat Wellness Center, has been name the chair of the Washington College Coalition for Substance Abuse Prevention. Dr. Tullos attended a Boeing Educational Alliance meeting recently. She added that it was an interesting meeting.

Executive Assistant for Policy & Planning:
Dr. Street reported that the Archives Committee met recently and will be submitting a report to Cabinet after the holidays. The Ad Hoc Travel Policy group will also be presenting to Cabinet sometime in January.

President:
Dr. McIntyre announced that she will be out of the office from December 19 through January 9 for vacation and to attend the NCAA Annual Convention. She is taking her laptop and blackberry, so will be accessible.
