Council
Wednesday, September 22, 20048:30 a.m. – President's Office Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Dave Soltz, Rich Corona, Julie Cloninger for Paul Baker, Elizabeth Street, Charlotte Tullos Guests: Karla Shugart, Ona Youmans, Pam Zupan, Nancy Howard, Staci Sleigh-Layman I. Presentations1. At 8:30 in Barge 412: Karla Shugart - Classification/Compensation, HR2005 (fifth in a series of five). Karla Shugart reported that all higher education and general government classifications will convert to the new system. Once converted, each class will be available for use by both higher education institutions and general government agencies. There will be very broad occupational categories, with four levels (level I, II, III, IV), and each level will have one pay range. Phase 1 (short-term) consolidations were accomplished with relative ease and with little or no cost impact. These are effective June 1, 2005. The details for Phase 2 (mid-term) and Phase 3 (long-term) are not available at this time. To assist in this consolidation process, Human Resources will be requesting updated position descriptions, reviewing them to verify appropriate classification, reallocating as appropriate prior to June 1, 2005, updating HRIS tables (PeopleSoft) to reflect new codes and titles, and determining costs for future conversions (Groups 2 and 3 and Phases 2 and 3). Dr. McIntyre asked that Ann Anderson be kept in the loop on these issues. Pam Zupan reported that on October 19-20 there will be training on the new Performance & Development Plan (PDP) for the President's Office, University Relations, and Student Affairs & Enrollment Management. This workshop covers several "must have" essentials to equip supervisors with important information they will need to use the new PDP effectively. This "hands-on" course focuses on practical tips and current best practices for handling common performance appraisal situations that supervisors often find challenging. Academic Affairs will have this training November 16-17 and Business and Financial Affairs is slated for training December 14-15. 2. At 9:15 in Barge 412: Nancy Howard - On-line diversity training programs. Nancy Howard reported that she spent some time this summer reviewing computer based diversity training. She explained that some advantages in having the training offered on-line are: employees can learn at their own speed, it reduces training costs, the curriculum is consistent in content and quality, it provides for privacy and safety, and it's convenient and accessible. She evaluated the computer based training programs on the following criteria: user friendliness, quality of curriculum, accessible on-line (internet/intranet) or on CD, reputation of the producer, length (and ability to exit program and save work), tracking capabilities, interesting, and the cost. Her recommendation is "The Potential is Yours (PIY)." This program explores diversity, relationships, and cultural dynamics in the workplace. It takes participants from learning about themselves and what valuing diversity means, to how this affects their relationships with coworkers and customers, and ultimately how this impacts personal and organizational success. The Cabinet suggested she present this information to the Diversity Council and that another program be brought back to cabinet for a comparison. ** Back to President's Office for remainder of Cabinet ** II.
