President's Cabinet

Wednesday, December 8, 2004
8:30 a.m. - Barge 412

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Rich Corona, Paul Baker, Libby Street, Charlotte Tullos, Dave Soltz

Guests: Dan Jack, Doug Ryder, Shelly Johnson, Linda Mahaney, Tracy Terrell, Bill Vertrees

I. At 8:30: Libby Street, Bill Vertrees, Doug Ryder, Tracy Terrell, Dan Jack, Shelly Johnson, Linda Mahaney re: Space Planning

1. Several issues were discussed regarding space.
They included: how we categorize buildings and what the process is for reclassification and transferring ownership; space planning and requesting; classroom space; class scheduling; resolving fragmentation and one stop shopping; building flexibility and combining resources for emerging needs; rethinking building committees and design process; planning at the centers; and current project updates. Mr. Vertrees and Mr. Ryder are working on a plan that would detail the status of space on campus. The group would like approval today to go forward with phase 1 of getting additional technology into classrooms. Cabinet approved going forward with this project. This group will continue to work on the "rules" of space prioritization and Cabinet will continue to be the approving body. An annual space meeting will be sponsored by the President's Office.

2. At 9:00: Mark Lundgren, Shelly Johnson, Becky Gubser re: Cost Study Data Presentation
This presentation has been tabled until after the first of the year.

II. Action Items

1. HECB Diversity Questionnaire - Dr. Street
Dr. Soltz and Dr. Street will complete this questionnaire and return it to the HECB by December 13.

III. Discussion Items

1. Employee Professional Development Policy - Dr. Street
The draft employee professional development policy has been reviewed and edited by Dr. Street and Nancy Howard. The vice presidents will share this draft policy with their deans, directors, and unit heads and send feedback to Dr. Street. The policy will then come back to Cabinet at the end of January.

2. Cultural Events List - Dr. Street
Dr. Street reminded the group to send their 2003-04 events list to her as soon as possible.

3. CWU Athletic Department Substance Use & Drug Testing Policy - Dr. Street
Dr. Street asked the cabinet to review this document. Keith Champagne and Ken Kladnik will be invited to a cabinet meeting in January to answer questions.

IV. Executive Reports

1. Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
Dr. Soltz reported that he had lunch with the Governor yesterday. It was a very fascinating meeting. Faculty Development Day was held on Monday, December 6 and went very well. There is a HECB meeting this Friday, December 10. Our Bachelor of Applied Science in Safety and Health Management and our Bachelor of Applied Science in Industrial Technology programs are on the consent agenda. Dr. Soltz also distributed copies of a memo to the Faculty Senate regarding the faculty salary base.

2. Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management
Dr. Tullos reported that the enrollment numbers for winter quarter 2005 are very strong. The tuition waiver committee has distributed all of the money for this year. The Transitions group meets this Friday, December 10. Financial Aid Staff are having a retreat today. Dr. Tullos received a request from a student to add the Seattle Times to our Readership program. She directed the student to submit a request to the S & A Fee Committee.

3. Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs
Mr. Corona reported that the draft financial statements will go to the Board of Trustees for review in February and the final statements will be approved in March. Employees are now using the suggestion box on the Intranet. Mr. Corona suggested the cabinet review some of the discussion items. The commercial activities committee recently met. They discussed the Saferide Program, the physical growth on campus, and the University Store student survey. Wendy Rittereiser, chair of the Retirement and Insurance committee, is suggesting changes in the membership of this committee. Cabinet approved the suggested changes. These will now go forward to Presidents Advisory Council for final approval. Keith Champagne and Kevin Kimball have formed a group called the Boundaryless group. This group discusses issues that cross over between Student Affairs & Enrollment Management and Business & Financial Affairs. Mr. Corona and Dr. Tullos attended the meeting this morning.

4. Vice President for University Relations
Dr. Baker reported that Rob Schnelle, Department of English/University Writing Center, will be teaching a writing seminar for staff who are interested. The course will run from January 11-May 24, 2005. There is space for approximately 15 people. Please let Dr. Baker know who will be attending for your division. Dr. Baker also reported that he recently met with Sande De Salles, Kittitas County Fair Program Director and will be the CWU representative for the Cowboy Poetry event. The year-end mailing to the retirees regarding their gift and estate planning needs has gone out and the mailing to the lifetime associates was sent last week.

5. Executive Assistant
Dr. Street reported that she met with Mark Anderson regarding the on line viewbook content. The five suggested topics are: academic excellence highlights, focus on students, preparing students for success, outstanding residential campus and lifestyle, and university centers. Each of these categories will have 4-5 sub-categories. Cabinet reviewed the content and made some suggestions. The suggestions will be incorporated into the document and then brought back to Cabinet. The emergency closure information went out to campus and is posted on the Intranet. Dr. Street summarized the Presidential Speakers scheduled, so far, for 2005. Mark Trahant, Editor of the Editorial Page of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, will be on campus January 24, 2005 and will give his lecture at 7:00 p.m. in the Music Building Concert Hall. William Perry, Former Secretary of Defense under President Clinton, will be on campus April 20, 2005 and will give his lecture at 4:00 p.m., location to be determined. Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul, & Mary, will be on campus November 1, 2005 and will give his lecture in the Music Building Recital Hall at 7:00 p.m.

6. President
Dr. McIntyre reported that the visit with Highline Community College very well. She added that she will be involved in several editorial board visits and meetings with legislators at the beginning of winter quarter 2005.
