President's Cabinet

Wednesday, August 4, 2004 8:30 a.m. - President's Office

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Paul Baker, Rich Corona, Dave Soltz, Charlotte Tullos

I. At 10:00: Margaret Smith to discuss Audit of Information Technology Security

Ms. Smith will be collaborating with Carmen Rahm and his staff in ITS and Professor Ron Tidd from the Department of Accounting on this project. The purpose of this audit is to assess the degree of compliance with the security policies prescribed by the State of Washington and the CWU Information Technology Services (ITS). They will be focusing on potential vulnerabilities and risks involving system recovery, physical security, and modems and how secure they are. Ms. Smith will be in contact with each of the vice presidents and keep them informed of her scheduled meetings with departments.

II. At 10:30: Ann Anderson to discuss Initiative 884 "template."

Ms. Anderson summarized the ICLO meeting from July 28, 2004. Discussions centered around getting the Fund Shift built into the base budget, possible dates for Higher Ed Day, capacity, Initiative-884, and the HECB Master Plan. In regards to budget preparation, the group only discussed the timeline. Ms. Anderson will contact Pat Muir at the Daily Record and give him an update on the impact of I-884 on CWU. She and Linda Schactler will also be working on a publicity plan and arrange meetings for Dr. McIntyre and our community college partners to discuss issues.

III. Action Items

1. Approval of Cabinet minutes from 6/23/04
Motion to approve as presented by Dr. Tullos. Seconded by Dr. Baker. No further discussion. Motion carried.

IV. Discussion Items

1. Music Grand Opening Plan
Dr. Baker gave an update on the New Music Facility Grand Opening and Open House scheduled for October 3, 2004. Plans are coming along. Invitations will be mailed soon and publicity and promotions are underway.

2. Cowboy Poetry Gathering
Sande DeSalles, Director of the Kittitas County Fair, asked if CWU would like to be listed as a co-producer of the Cowboy Poetry event. Dr. McIntyre will discuss this with Teresa Kulik to see if there are legal implications or financial obligations.

V. Executive Reports

Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
Dr. Soltz reported that his trip to China was good. The NSF sponsored program is great and was a real success. We have a strong chance of a renewal agreement. He also signed an agreement with Shaanxi Normal University while there. The Academic Affairs retreat is scheduled for next week. Discussions will include planning, budget, and Fall Faculty Day. Dr. Soltz will ask Roy Savoian to update Dr. McIntyre on the Economic Impact Study.

Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management
Dr. Tullos reported that a record number of students and parents attended freshmen orientations this summer. Next year the transfer student orientation will be redesigned. They are still looking for volunteers to teach UNIV 101 classes. If anyone is interested, please contact Scott Carlton in Academic Advising Services.

Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs
Mr. Corona distributed the OFM Six-Year Outlook. The news release on the power pole route will be distributed August 5, 2004. The SUB/REC is out to bid. The Sue Lombard bid is in and hopefully we will have a "notice to proceed" next Tuesday or Wednesday. The warehouse in West Ellensburg is coming along. An inventory of CWU signage was just completed. Negotiations are still underway. Dr. McIntyre has authorized ITS to implement the GroupWise and Intranet integration on all PC's over the next couple of weeks. Macintosh users will be asked to make the Intranet site the home page on their browser. A memo from Dr. McIntyre regarding this issue will be emailed campus wide in the next week. Mr. Corona attended a Business Officers conference in Milwaukee two weeks ago.

Vice President for University Relations
Dr. Baker reported that the new College of Business Development person starts next week. There will be three more candidates for the Senior Director of Development position coming in Monday and Tuesday next week. The next position they will be working on filling is the College of Arts and Humanities development person. The Alum retreat is in Leavenworth this weekend. Dr. Baker distributed the year-end figures for the CWU Foundation and the Gifts and Pledges report.

President
Dr. McIntyre attended the AASCU Summer Council of Presidents conference in Idaho last week. The BOT retreat will be held Aug 5-6, 2004 at the President's Reception Center.

Ms. Dawson will arrange for a construction update from Bill Vertrees at an upcoming President's Advisory Council meeting in September.
