MinutesPresident’s CabinetWednesday, May 12, 2004 8:30 a.m. – President’s Office Jerilyn McIntyre, Dave Soltz, Charlotte Tullos, Libby Street, Paul Baker, Rich Corona I. Action Items 1. Approval of Cabinet minutes from 4/21/04 and 4/28/04. Motion to approve as presented by Dr. Soltz. Seconded by Mr. Corona. No further discussion. Motion carried. II. Presentation: 1. At 8:30: Jennifer Fountain re: Presidential Internships. Ms. Fountain met with Dr. McIntyre about three weeks ago on this subject. At this meeting, they decided to bring the conversation to the Cabinet for discussion as to whether the program was ready for expansion and to debrief on student assignments. The President’s Office and VPSAEM Office had interns this year. The Provost and VPBFA are also interested in having interns this year. The Cabinet discussed several facets of the program and made several programmatic decisions including adding a seminar to the program. Next year’s program will be offered at an undergraduate level only. A generic application will be developed with individual paragraphs describing each division. Ms. Fountain will handle the initial interviewing and submit a written profile on the top candidates to the vice presidents for final selection. III. Discussion Items 1. Next year's Presidential Speakers – Dr. Street. A list of potential speakers who are on the circuit for next year was distributed for feedback. Dr. Street will take these recommendations back to the selection committee and pursue the top choices. 2. Diversity Report – Dr. Street. Dr. Street has researched the diversity goals from last year’s report that have been responded to. She has also received reports from Leslie Webb and Donna Kramer on activity in their respective areas. Dr. Street will send a draft to the Cabinet for their review later this week. 3. 2004-05 University Catalog cover art – Ms. Hodges. The Cabinet reviewed the new options and Dr. Tullos will take the Cabinet’s recommendations back to Graphics. III. Executive Reports Dr. Dave Soltz – Provost/SVPAADean Liahna Armstrong has announced that this year will be her last as dean of CAH, and thus this is a transition year. She will be stepping down and return to the faculty. The associate dean, Dr. Rosco Tolman is also returning to the faculty and Dr. Armstrong will be hiring a replacement. The report, “2004 Legislative Summary: Accountability,” was distributed. For discussion at the 5/26 Cabinet meeting. The provost and deans met with ITS director, Carmen Rahm, and have developed a plan for the first phase of equipment replacements in the computer labs. This is part of the overall computing replacement and general equipment replacement plans. The goal is a four-year replacement cycle. Academic Affairs, the student technology fee, and ITS will be contributing funds to the project. The Faculty Development & Research Committee has completed its internal distribution of funds for faculty grants. Thirty-three grant applications were funded. Dr. Roger Fouts has agreed to stay on for a second year as part-time director of research in Graduate Studies. A search for a full-time, permanent position will hopefully be initiated in one year. Dr. Soltz updated the group on the status of the PERC negotiations. There will be a faculty forum focused on academic planning today. The provost hopes to hold faculty forums on academic issues once per month next academic year. The Faculty Senate Committee nominees list was shared for feedback. Dr. Charlotte Tullos – VPSAEMDr. Tullos will be traveling to Highline Community College to negotiate student services for CWU’s center. Several logistical issues with the CWU-Yakima center were discussed. Mr. Rich Corona – VPBFAEIS report was distributed. The software implementation process continues to go smoothly. Progress being made on web registration issues. The last system stress test went well. There are 670 students eligible to register via the web and 300 have already done so, with no system problems. The CWU suggestion box will be publicized on the Intranet. A progress report on collective bargaining for classified staff was given. Dr. Paul Baker – VPURIt was a good pre-event for donor cultivation at the CWU Alumni Mariners vs. Yankees baseball game on 5/8. The staff has debriefed and will be making even more improvements for next year’s event. The director’s retreat this weekend will focus on campaign strategic planning. The Foundation Board meeting and new member orientation will be next week in Bellevue. The Board’s investment and finance committee met 5/7. U.S. Bank reported good returns for this year, estimated at almost 7% by year’s end. The Len Thayer Small Grants award committee meeting was Monday, and $5000 was awarded across the campus. Dr. Baker will be coordinating a presentation by staff from Mountain Star regarding partnership opportunities with CWU. The development officer search committee will be bringing finalists to campus soon.
Dr. Libby Street – Executive Assistant The Family Resource Initiative has sent out a campus-wide announcement that describes CWU Family Resource Initiative Faculty Fellowships that are available for Summer 2004. Dr. Jerilyn McIntyre - PresidentThe ASCWU-BOD elections are coming up soon and several issues were reviewed. A response to the faculty’s presentation at the 5/7 Board of Trustees meeting on distribution of funds for faculty salaries is under development. IV. Information Items V.
