Minutes
President's Cabinet
Wednesday, April 23, 2003
8:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. President's Office

Present: Jerilyn McIntyre, Charlotte Tullos, Libby Street, Paul Baker, Rich Corona, Linda Beath for Dave Soltz.

I.    Discussion Items

1.    Budget and Legislative updates.
There is no new information on budgets from the legislature at this time. The Cabinet moved on to a discussion of preparations for the Budget Advisory Committee meeting on 4/24. The agenda, presentation format, and other details were discussed.

2.    Honorary Degree Policy.
A policy statement and a procedural statement were created to formalize this process. The Cabinet reviewed both parts. Minor changes in wording were made. This will now move on to the President's Advisory Council at the next meeting 5/7. If approved, will then proceed to the Board of Trustees for final approval and subsequent listing in the CWU Policies and Procedures manuals.

3.    At 10:00: Peer Institutions with Mark Lundgren.
Mr. Lundgren brought in a revised list of peer institutions for the Cabinet's review. The group made a number of adjustments to the list and asked Mr. Lundgren to re-crunch the numbers and bring back the resulting list. Significant progress has been made to fine-tune this list and it is very close to being finalized.

II.    Executive Reports

Dr. Linda Beath for Dr. Soltz - Provost/SVPAA
Program review is ready to move forward for the fall.

Academic Affairs is now working on specific description of Bachelor's of Applied Science degree. There is also a discussion underway exploring the creation of a Native American Studies minor. Faculty input is being solicited regarding the possible development of such a program.

The University Writing Center had 600 students that received assistance last quarter. The Center holds excellence in writing workshops, program specific writing remediation, and placement tests. The concept is working very well. The Center received funding to continue programs during the summer and is looking at expanding the program to address the needs of graduate students. The Writing Center programs are open to exempt and civil service staff as well, at no charge.

At the SAFARI project meeting last week staff from all over campus discussed academic policies and what makes operational sense for students. Existing policies will be reviewed to determine what items will be included or eliminated with the Student Affairs module implementation. This is an excellent opportunity to make needed changes to policies and procedures. It was a very informative meeting. This discussion will continue over a series of meetings.

CWU Geology professor, Dr. Meghan Miller, was quoted in a New York Times article, "Slow Quakes May Lay Groundwork for Big Ones," 4/22/03. Congratulations to Dr. Miller.

Dr. Charlotte Tullos - VPSAEM
Dr. Tullos shared a copy of the revised new student orientation brochure.

The enrollment figures continue to look very good. Freshmen applications are up over 200 compared to the same time last year, and 2002 was a record year. Over $60M in financial aid will be awarded this year.

The Career Services Sponsors Reception on 4/16 was very successful. The Leadership Luncheon on 4/17 was also well attended.

Dr. Tullos recently received a petition from the progressive student union regarding same sex living in campus housing.

Dr. Paul Baker - VPUR
The Gift and Pledge report is still looking strong. There is a lot happening in University Relations. Two cultivation events coming up on 5/6 and 5/16 are expected to add to the already substantially improved levels of giving and additional new donors.

The Alumni Association Board meeting is this Saturday 4/26 in Barge 412. Dr. Baker will be attending the College of Business Advisory Board meeting next Tuesday, 4/29. The ticket sales for the 5/16 Benaroya concert and the 5/6 Mariners vs. Yankees events are going very well. There are only a few tickets left for each event.

Mr. Rich Corona - VPBFA
The details of next week's Cabinet retreat were discussed.

The Auxiliary Services Business Plan will be taken to the next Trustees meeting in May and will include proposals for room & board rates, capital planning, and plans for SUB/Rec, Kamola, and Sue Lombard.

The kickoff meeting for the FMS upgrade process was Monday 4/21. The HR module upgrade is currently underway. A timeline and goals are being developed. However, the full implementation of the FMS upgrade may not be finished until the end of 2004.

Mr. Corona is working with Drs. Soltz, Mack, and McIntyre on an economic impact study for CWU.

Dr. Libby Street - Executive Assistant
The Campus Community Building Project will be holding a "round-up" tomorrow, 4/24. The featured speaker is Mike Reilly, Director of Admissions.

The Health Careers Education meeting on Monday, 4/21 was very successful. There were about 20 people in attendance that will continue this conversation.

A number of other projects are moving along as well. Planning for Indian Country Week, May 27-30, is progressing. Dr. Street will meet with the cultural archives group this afternoon. The childcare task force is about ready to report back to the Cabinet. Historic Ellensburg is honoring the Kamola Hall restoration on 5/10. The final speaker for the Presidential Speakers Series, Dr. Geneva Gay on 4/17, event went very well.
