The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies offers a major in philosophy and a specialization (the equivalent of a major) in Religious Studies. A large plan (62 credits) and a small plan (50 credits) are available for both the philosophy major and religious studies specialization. Specific requirements for these plans can be found at the following links: Philosophy Major, Religious Studies Specialization and in the Online Catalog.
To assist prospective students, current students and transfer students in completing our programs within two years, the following suggested plans have been developed:
Philosophy: Suggested Plan of Study
Religious Studies: Suggested Plan of Study
Note: Our programs do not have academic courses required for entrance into the major; however, the following courses are required for the major and are best completed before enrolling in upper division courses:
PHIL 201 Introduction to Logic (5 credits) – required for the philosophy major
RELS 101 World Religions (5 credits) – required for the religious studies specialization
RELS 201 Sacred Books of the World (5 credits) – required for the religious studies specialization
Transfer students may complete the equivalent of these courses at their institutions.
Information regarding transfer course equivalencies/policies can be found at: http://www.cwu.edu/registrar/transfer-course-equivalenciespolicies.
Please note: Completing these courses does not guarantee admission to Central Washington University or the degree program. Transfer students may also complete these courses at CWU.
Please direct any questions regarding our programs to the department chair, Dr. Matthew Altman (altmanm@cwu.edu), or contact philo@cwu.edu.
